Lickety Split, RNs have a HUGE turnover. On average, a nurse only works for 4 years until the long hours and poor pay make them quit.

I don't agree with the comment about clinical psychology. Working in mental health is rarely what it's portrayed on TV. This is partly because there is a need to work more closely to medical doctors. I'm almost done with my Master's in counseling and am working with mostly ADHD and Asperger's kids. It's not purely "in your mind" - because your moods, your fear, all of this mind stuff still has a connection to your body and health. However, counselors and psychologists are much more qualified than medical doctors with little-to-no training on psychological disorders and working on that spectrum. My point is that both fields need to work together.

I have an uncle who studied architecture, but now he's practicing interior design because of the higher demands for designers.

Bluekitten, valid point on the public relations career. Being in public relations myself, it's entertaining to see how heartbroken other students get when they realize that it's not just about mingling with celebrities and CEO's lol

Uh oh. I'm in architecture school.

I think that LAWYER is the most overrated career. Talk about incredibly long hours (many of which aren't even billable), you often have to work on menial jobs and basically never get any interesting cases. Nice money though.

I never would have picked police officer as a highly desirable job-whatever the perks.

melanie RN, really? every nurse i know loves her job! they like that they work 10 hours on and then have fewer days on and feel like it's a job that allows them to pay the bills but still be with their family. why don't you like it? on the other hand virtually every physical therapist and speech therapist i know dislikes thier job. they feel they are over worked and under appreciated, with patients expecting them to "fix" them rather than help them make reasonable gains.

I can't believe that Registered Nurse wasn't actually on the list. I can fully attest that it is overrated.

It is surprising some of the careers on that list. I never really thought some would be so "overrated" but you know when you think about it they are.

Darn it, I was going to say Police Officer on the last one. I agree with all of these, but I like the two big ones (I.E. doctor and lawyer) should be on the list, if they aren't.

Apparel/Footwear/Fashion should also been added. I work for a very large multi-billion dollar sports company and it is amazing how many people think that because the company I work for makes so much money that must mean it trickles down. I am not saying I am broke but it is not how it appears. Like every job there is the good and the bad!

I'd add public relations to that list. I've seen too many college-age girls with visions of being Samantha Jones, only to find out that the reality is VERY different and often not that glamorous.

4/4 woohoo!! Jaime, you are so right -- I'm an attorney, and life isn't like Law and Order :P
