I'm Asking: Do You Expect to Receive Cash For the Holidays?

As we get older, it's harder for parents and extended family members to select gifts for us, and many of my friends have said they've come to expect to receive cash for the holidays. Usually, cash is given with the intent that you'll spend it on something that you've chosen for yourself and that you love. It takes the pressure off of family members and they're able to essentially give you what you wanted.

Do you think you'll receive cash this year? If so, what will you do with it?

I already know I'm receiving cash this year. It's going to buy me a space heater and part of a security deposit for a new, cheaper apartment (so it's money to save money, right?).

Yes, I've received cash every year for christmas since I was a teenager.

I'm pretty sure that I'll get cash. Most of the time, I'll use the money for shopping. I just can't resist it!

I sure do...because it's all I ask for! My dad always gets sad because he wants a gift for me under the he'll buy something I can't/won't use...I still get some money though, mostly from extended family. And especially this year...grad school apps totally blew my savings, and I'd rather just be able to save up to buy practical things I'm going to need next year - money is always appreciated.

My grandmother is the only one in my family who gives cash. This year, she sent me money to take my family out to dinner and prepaid for a cut & color at my fav salon. She rocks.

i kind of wish that i would get money for the holiday rather than a present, because i would put it to bills rather than anything else. it's HARD when you have expenses and you just don't make enough $$ to get everything paid

My husband's extended family always sends us cash and I always appreciate their generosity.

Lukin, I use gift cards from the previous christmas to buy christmas presents for other family members for the present christmas. It saves me a lot of money.

My family gives gift cards before cash. I think it's essentially the same thing, but it's guaranteeing that you buy something fun for something instead of just socking it away.

Yep, my family frequently gifts cash! Especially the grandparents- they like to give a few crisp bills along with random fun things they've found in the past year (e.g. a marilyn monroe-esque statuette with tiny hooks instead of a head- its for hanging jewelry! haha)

I immediately said no, but then I realized my grandma will probably give me some extra cash, hehe.

My mom knows I rarely buy myself clothes, so she always gets me a Kohl's gift card for Christmas. It's nice because it goes pretty far and I can pick out my own stuff and she doesn't have to worry about sizes. I always get my mom and dad a PetSmart gift card because they have 9 dogs, so they're always buying stuff there.

My family has a strict NO CASH rule for Christmas. Gift cards are okay but not cash. And I'm okay with that.

My father-in-law doesn't buy gifts for anyone except my mother-in-law. Everyone else gets cash and a stern lecture about using it for something you 'want' rather than something you 'need.' If he does give gifts this year I'm fairly confident it will be cash.
