I'm Asking: Would You Take 8 Weeks' Severance or Your Job?

I'm Asking: Would You Take 8 Weeks' Severance or Your Job?

Just for fun, let's pretend your boss approaches you out of the blue and offers you eight weeks' severance including medical benefits. If you don't accept the offer, you keep your job, and if you accept, you'll be jobless in eight weeks and back on the market.

What would you do — take the money and run or keep your job?

Oohhh that would be really tempting. Two months is a pretty decent amount of time to look for another job!

I'd keep my local government job. When cities or counties fire people, they tend to be the employees who have been there the shortest amount of time, regardless of how valuable of an employee you are. It's in my best interest to stay with the same employer as long as possible. And there are practically no jobs available in my field in the private sector right now, so gov't jobs are the only option. Government employers aside, I don't think I've ever worked for anyone who offered severance packages. Unless the box that they hand you to throw your stuff in before they kick you out the door counts.

Regardless of the economic times, I'd keep my job...but ESPECIALLY because of the economic times, I'd keep my job!

I would stay at my job. I'd have to win the mega lottery in order to pry me away from a stable job right now.

you know, i think that i would seriously consider taking it. it's hard since i like my job, but i think that at least im' in a market that i could find something else and not be without a job for too long. it's such a double edged sword to think about either taking the offer and leaving or staying and being un-certain if there will be future layoffs etc.

I would take severance if I had another job lined up or if I was confident that I could find a new job within the eight weeks. Otherwise, I'd stay in my current job.

Severance probably. My military-morale is at an all time low lately and I can't help but wonder how much happier I'd be if I were civilian again.

I'd take the money! I've been feeling restless at my job anyway. Time for something new.

I would try and negotiate for a longer term foe either the pay and/or the medical benefits. If they said no, take it or leave it, I would take the money and temporary benefits and borrow money to have some medical work done since I have to spend my Flex Account. Though the job market varies from city to city, Atlanta has a lot of open jobs and if push came to shove I could work for a temp agency and get the time to find what i really want to do.

In this day and age--I would definitely keep my job. I also don't like to NOT work. I like to have a balance of work and relaxation. I couldn't see myself staying at home and having to search for another job, too.

At my last job, I'd have taken the severance no question. But I like my job now, so I'd stick around.
