Male Co-Workers' Bathroom Habits

I'm Asking: Your Male Co-workers and The Men's Room

Anyone that's ever worked in a job with a lot of men knows that many bring a newspaper (or other reading material) into the jon. It's something that I just never got used to, and think it's some kind of phenomenon that they really don't care who knows their business at their place of business! Am I being too critical here or do you also think it's bizarre the way some of your male co-workers strut, armed with entertainment, into the bathroom?

I know of one male coworker that always takes a book with him. I've never seen a woman ever bring reading material into the bathroom. Plenty bring their cell phones though. Ugh.

People take all sorts of things into the bathroom at my office: magazines, coffee, work material. It bugs me more when people talk on their cell phones in the bathroom. I don't want the people in the other stalls listening to me, much less their clients. And what must the people on the other line think when they're in the middle of a business call and they hear an industrial toilet flush? Not professional!

I'll take a magazine or something sometimes when I use the bathroom. I admit though that I'll hide it so nobody sees me carrying it in there. I think it's good that men don't care about who sees them walking in there with reading material, because really... who cares?!

it is so gross! I have to see it daily and it makes me want to vom! I mean Do it in the privacy of your own home, but at work! It's just ridiculous!

I can top chibarosa: While orienting me to a new job a germiphobic co-worker mentioned that our boss did that. What made it gross to me wasn't the germs but the newspaper of choice. It was one of those rags that runs a daily photo of a scantily clad model (they also run a male model photo, lest you think it's sexist). I don't want to be crude here, but it crossed my mind that he might be relieving himself in another way in the washroom. -Ew, I want that image out of my head again right now.

i don't like it because the vent in the women's bathroom on my office's floor is connected to the vent in the men's bathroom so i can actually hear pages turning. i make sure i get out of there quick so i don't hear anything else!

I always keep a book in the bathroom at home, but never at work. I'm not big on public restrooms and I think part of what weirds me out is that they're so silent! If they would just play music or something in there it would be way nicer. Also, whenever I'm sitting at the reception desk and I'm really bored, I definitely pay attention to who goes to the bathroom how often and for how long. I definitely know who spends 10 minutes in there, and also who obviously isn't in there long enough to wash his hands. Gross.

it kind of sounds weird that they'd do it at work, but I know that guys do it all the two year old brother won't go into the bathroom without his "poo-read" as he calls's weird to me that they read on the toilet in the first place, personally i don't spend enough time to read anything...and toilets arent comfortable to sit on anyway!

You'd be grossed out by the MUNI bathrooms then - we have actual lounges in our divisions. We have a couch and a chair, magazines etc. I would guess the men's room is the same- it's not just for "business" sometimes its a place to go to gather one's thoughts. Personally, I don't touch the magazines in the ladies or anywhere in the division or the doorknobs after watching my fellow drivers come out of the stalls and walk right out of the bathroom without washing their washing their hands. Ewww...

I've seen men from other offices on our floor walk into gabbing on their headsets. Who does that?!

I don't really care about men doing this. All the men in my life take some reading materials when they go to the loo---my father, my brothers, my exes, and now my husband.

I'm never in there long enough need something to read, I go when I need to not before.

It doesn't bother me that much, although I had this one boss... He would come into the break room and grab the newspaper, and we all knew where he was going... Then he'd return from the restroom and PLACE THE NEWSPAPER BACK ON THE BREAK ROOM TABLE when he was finished! Even if people were sitting there eating lunch! How disgusting! We told him how gross and unsanitary that was and he would do it anyway.

In think in general, guys are just like "whatever" when it comes to bathroom stuff. I think society has taught women to be more "formal" about stuff like that. Plenty-o guys will fart and burp in public, while on the phone, or just standing around...yeah, it's gross. I don't want to know or smell or hear any of that. Buy guys could give a crap (pardon the pun). That's why they're guys and we're girls. But I too often feel a bit jipped when I'm on the can and have nothing to stare at except the back of the stall door. I think someone should tape up a page from a magazine on there each day. So we have something to look at. Some gossipy type stuff that's fun to read. But please, no pics of guys staring out at you. I have performance anxiety.

dude, i brought in a whole stack of old fashion magazines to keep in the office ladies' room because i was sick of not having anything to look at. even when i go #1, i like to be entertained. and one of my favorite things to do is poop on the clock.

Getting offended by someone "openly" pooping is, in my opinion, pretty ridiculous. Haven't you ever read or heard about "Everyone Poops"? Everyone poops, why is it a big deal if you know when people are doing it? I think it's great that men are so comfortable with it. I wish I could be more comfortable with it but I am totally squeamish about it in public restrooms. I agree with Chancleta - GO MEN!

After reading this I reminded of the episode of Seinfeld where George takes his shirt off to go to the bathroom. But I don't think I've ever seen any of the men at work carrying reading material into the bathroom.

At work I think it is weird. I worked with a guy once that would go to the bathroom in his socks. I was more disturbed by that.

Wow... I've never witnessed the phenomenon personally, but I did know a girl who couldn't - well, you know - without wearing her older brother's old sneakers. She even took them with her when she moved away from home! So, I don't see that so much in the workplace, but like 'books and shoes' says, it is what it is.

I have a guy in my office that does this daily. When someone is looking for him, we just say that he's in 'Pooville.' Haha.

I always bring something to read while I'm in the bathroom at home. But definitely not at work. That would feel weird. I dunno why.

I have no problems with it. My fiance will actually go to the bathroom with other coworkers. ODD, but they are men after all.

Yes, I would see my old boss heading that way with a newspaper under his arm. But it is what it is.
