Personal Relationships Most Important to a Person's Life

What Experience Has Affected Your Life Most?

Choosing between your career and relationship can be next to impossible, since the absence of either could lead to misery, but which affects your life more? A new study, which contradicts previous research, says relationships bring people more happiness — and more misery — than anything else.

Researchers at the University of Buffalo say that falling in and out of love are the most important landmarks in a person's life, above professional careers and personal accomplishments, like hobbies or losing weight. They asked 376 people across all ages to name the most positive and negative thing that's ever happened to them, and people described social events over and over again.

So whether it was a breakup or a breakthrough, what's the most transformative thing that's happened to you?

Getting off Xanax changed my life completely. I only took it for 2 months (the smallest dose available) and when I tried to get off it, I thought I was dying! Bad withdrawals. Scary, I thought I was going insane. This just happened recently and I am so grateful, I checked myself into Detox so they can keep and eye on me while I got off it. They game me medication for seizures because you can have seizures while coming off of xanax. that changed my life completely. Now I am recovering and I hope that in a few months, I can feel like myself again and stronger.

Something when I was younger, but my mother intervened in a very positive way. As an adult, experienced divorce. Years later...falling in love, again. Becoming self-employed. Obtaining a bachelor's degree.

Moving across the country twice. Being with and then breaking up with my ex of 5 years. Both of those things have changed my life and have changed me.

Oh lord, there are so many. Getting out of an abusive relationship and into one that was amazing and supportive, getting kicked out of high school and getting myself back together, going through Katrina and building lifelong friendships because we all supported one another...I could go on, but those three are probably the most significant.

A recent trip to San Francisco. I was at a crossroads in my life and the more I thought about what I wanted to do, the more I panicked and the more I got lost... so when a friend needed someone to keep her company on a last minute road trip so SF I grabbed random clothes, a bottle of water and ran off. I was suffocated all along and just needed to get the hell away. She was ushering for an event at Sigmund Stern Grove and.. my god, it's like a forest out of a fairytale. Coupled with the friendly faces, clean air and San Francisco Ballet, something in me just clicked and it was like "wow, life is so short and it's so beautiful, why have I been overthinking it?" Like the irony of it all just slapped me in the face. I was thinking about life so much and what to do with it that I was missing it. So when I came home I was a changed girl. I was just like screw it, I might let down my parents but I'm not going to pursue nursing, it's not me, I'm going to go for design and that's final. It makes me happy, damn it. And what's funny is they ended up supporting me. :) I'm on the road to art school, now.
