The Pros of Legalizing Drugs

Brilliant or Baffling: Legalizing Drugs to Save Money

All drugs — pot, crack, heroin, meth, and more — should be legalized, says Harvard professor Jeffrey Miron. He says that we would be saving $41.3 billion annually, which the government spends (ineffectively) on the crackdown on drugs. People are still using drugs despite the efforts and huge amounts of money are spent to eradicate it, Miron says. Not everyone in the public is addicted to drugs like caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, so the same will hold true if we make all the other drugs legal, Miron rationalizes. Sounds like a very controversial and innovative way to generate more revenue. What's your take on this — brilliant or baffling?

you guys sound greedy not everything is about money. by legalizing drugs the crime rate for the selling drugs will go down but the use related crimes will go up. the people that will be using the drugs will get high therefore do things harmful things so think about that not about money!!!

I'm pretty sure that most drug addicts know the danger of using the drugs that they use. They all probably know that overdosing will cause them a lot of harm. I don't have a problem with legalizing drugs. It would probably make a lot of money for various companies.

Hahah Nataliedee.com wrote something like that a while ago.. she said "How to win the war on drugs and save the economy: Legalize pot, tax the hell out of it. Done and done." I personally don't do pot because I don't want to have the hassle of getting it or having to worry about drug tests at work. If it was legal, I may change my mind about it. Not about hard drugs though. Difficult subject.

I still don't agree with legalizing hard drugs.

It would also cut out a lot of the violence associated with the drug trade (in both the U.S. and Latin America).

Agreed. Just legalize it all already. The war on drugs is a joke.

The "War on Drugs" is *such* an ineffective use of our tax dollars and waste of prison space. I totally agree that they should be legalized. The only potential problem is increased access for people without the social networks to obtain drugs currently, which might lead more lonely people to it. But despite that I still think it's a good idea.

Besides the 40 billion saved, think of the potential tax revenue!
