Relationship Protocol: Are You Fighting About Money?

I wasn't all that surprised when I read in the April issue of Glamour magazine that 43 percent of couples fight about money. When you're having to learn to love the simple life again and cut back on your frivolous spending, it's easy to be on edge — especially if your money woes are ruining your sex life!

Of course this recession is affecting everyone differently so tell me, is money a topic of conversation that lends itself to an argument these days?

He might lose his job but we're not fighting about it. Yet.

Sometimes. Right now, we're doing some upgrades in our home. We squabble about which items to splurge on, and which to be economical about. We've finally come to an agreement on everything, except for the damn faucet spout in the shower. Hopefully, we will come to a resolution tomorrow. :)

we have an on going thing now where he wants to by a new car. i say now is not the time and he is INSISTING that this is when we will get the best deal. sales tax is going up on 4/1, so if i can hold him off till then i think i will have dodged it for quite awhile. it's to the point where the dealership is calling the house and that pissed me off. a big purchase like that should be a joint decision not a "oh by the way" thing.

Luckily, my husband and I have very similar viewpoints on money. We're both pretty cheap when it comes to most expenses and neither of us makes major purchases without consulting the other one. The recession hasn't actually affected us too badly. Since I was unemployed before the recession and now I have an income, we're actually better off now than we were before. My husband had to take a very small pay cut but we're pretty confident that the company will restore the normal payscale once things improve. My sister and brother-in-law fight about money a lot though...she's frugal like I am, but he loves to blow money on stupid crap like a 62 inch TV (which looks absolutely ridiculous in a tiny 2 bedroom condo) and a white leather sectional sofa and at least 2 video games a month.

No, we don't fight. We are actually doing pretty well so things haven't been that bad. I mean we don't go out to eat as much and we try not to buy things we don't need, but we are doing fine. We are just trying to save more and we are both in agreement on that!

i said above that i'd be mad if my man spent money like crazy when he should be saving - but oohsexypenguin reminded me that i'd also go nuts if my man was super thrifty! my bf isn't thrifty, he's responsible though - we spend money but we also save money and we are very much on the same wavelength when it comes to that - his best friend, however, is suppppper cheap and if i were his girlfriend i would HATE THAT. he made her/them buy a cheap house when he could afford a nicer one and he won't go on vacations or spend money on nice furniture or anything...he saves every penny...i'd go insane

We have our arguments here and there - he's a bit more thrifty than I am (I literally have to drag him to buy himself clothes, which he sorely needs!), but in general we both compromise when it comes to the finances. Neither of us is totally unreasonable.

My hubby and I havent had a money fight in a while. We both know we had to cut back on certain things. For me it was shopping, for him, it was buying beer..and if he does, he knows to buy the cheaper stuff. It all does the same job anyway. Weve even started using coupons more and the whole cheaper brands. Every now and again we splurge for the sake of our son who doesnt understand the money troubles as of yet.

We don't really fight about money but he's unemployed right now (I'm very supportive so thats not the issue). The problem is that he still wants to pay for stuff or buy me gifts and I wished he wouldn't because I know how tight money is for him right now. He'll let me treat now a then (60%him-40%me) but he still buys these gifts and he gets a little weird if I tell him that although I appreciate it he should save the money or I even suggest we done cheap/free stuff. He can be a little stubborn sometimes.

Woooo! I am amazed at how close this is. My husband complains about never having money but he also treats a credit card like a gift card. Like he has been given $5,000 to spend not that its a credit line.

My BF and I have no money issues. The economy's huge malfunction has not been a problem. We moved from a more expensive state to a very cheap one, and his pay was not cut at all (job transfer) so, we're sitting pretty. In general, when we did have higher living expenses, we are both cheap. We buy nothing for ourselves on any given day. Once every 2 months I'll buy makeup, and that's it. We don't buy clothes, or go out to eat often. We always buy generic brands of food and use coupons. I come from a very well to do family where money was spent ridiculously. I could NEVER live like that. We never argue about money, since we both don't spend anything.

no, not at all, but you know what used to kill me with my ex? (while we were in school) - he would complain about never having money and being too broke to do stuff but would blow his money on stupid crap that would make me nuts in this recession - if i were trying hard to save and cut back on spending but my partner wasn't doing his share of the task, i'd be so angry! but thankfully this isnt a problem for us right now
