Smoking Bans at Companies

Brilliant or Baffling: Companies Refusing to Hire Smokers

It appears that more and more hospitals and firms are reluctant to hire smokers, according to the Wall Street Journal. In fact, job hunters may have to undergo nicotine urine tests, and new hires who are caught smoking on the job may face firing. The incentives behind the "tobacco-free hiring" include less expenditures for the company — firms have to spend $3,391 per smoker on health care and lower worker productivity costs. What do you think of this new trend, is this brilliant or baffling?

I am not a smoker and I hate being around people while they smoke but the fact is it's not illegal and it's still a personal choice and freedom so I think it's not right that a company will refuse to hire you if you choose to smoke.

I think it's brilliant! One of my coworkers smells so horrible all the time and her office smells like stale cigarettes, it's gross. Not to mention, I hate that when I go outside on a break for **fresh** air, I'm overwhelmed my the stank of cigarette smoke.

Doesn't affect me! Am so glad none of my coworkers smoke. Well..that I know of! ;)

Interesting. I can get behind the general concept, if they included other unhealthy life style choices. But those are generally harder to identify than whether or not someone smokes.
