Mad Men: Do Looks Help You Succeed in Your Career?

Boy, was there a huge surprise on last night's Mad Men! The season ends with a bang when Don Draper busts out an unexpected proposal to his beautiful secretary, Megan. After announcing the engagement to the office, we see a rare moment of camaraderie between Peggy and Joan, in which the two unhappily predict Don will probably promote Megan to copywriter since, as Joan puts it, "he's not going to want to be married to his secretary."

To find out what this means for Peggy and Joan, read after the jump.

For these ambitious career women (or as ambitious as they can be in that era), this new move really stings, because it seems like Megan will move up the ladder through the merit of beauty alone and not hard work. "A pretty face comes along and everything goes out the window," Peggy remarks, bitterly recalling Draper's engagement tidings trumping her own news about scoring a client that might just save the drowning ad agency.

It sounds unfair that Megan gets to effortlessly advance her career through her beautiful bones, but beauty seems to open up a lot of doors for people. For example, research has shown that women who have model-type bodies make $15,575 more per year than those who are only average-sized. Even though we've definitely come a long way in terms of women's rights and workplace discrimination, do you think the same prejudice still lingers? Do gorgeous women get preferential treatment in the workplace?

I think it's a double-edged sword. Good looks might get you in the door, but they can also mean you're not taken as seriously, particularly if your natural looks tend toward "sexy" as opposed to just "pretty."
