Terrible Interview Stories

Savvy Community: Interview Gone Wrong

Interviews are tough for everyone! Shortiegurl03 shared her tale of an interview gone wrong in our Ask Savvy group.

So I just got back from a horrible interview...I had diarrhea of the mouth (gross, I know but it was that bad). The questions were basic enough, what are your weaknesses, strengths, etc. but every time I answered a question it came out all kinds of crazy. In the middle of the interview I just wanted to get up and leave, it was that bad. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Please share!

Thank ya'll so much for your advice and words of encouragement! I don't feel so alone with my interview gone wrong! I went on yet another interview, with the first one not going over so well. I practiced my questions (much to my boyfriends amusement) and blew this lady out of the water! I totally got the job! hooray! thanks everyone, I got my confidence back! =)

I have been there. The last time was about 4 months ago or so it was my first interview in about 2 years and I made a fool out of myself. I was studdering, I was breathing too hard (I had 3 people interview me in a small room and I'm sure they heard me) I would stop in the middle of an answer that was being asked and apologize because I was so nervous. I cried for days after that. But eventually I got over it. I talked to my mom and she encouraged me to keep trying. It happens. Now I am more confident and I practice my answers before I go into an interview. Good Luck.

I think we've all had bad interviews. Sometimes you just don't mesh with the interviewer. Not to deflect the experience from you, but if they experience felt that awful they must not have had great control. If it doesn't work out, you'll find someplace else. I'd just try and turn this into a learning experience, and it sounds like you already have!

Ugh, I've totally been there! I have a bad habit in interviews and presentations of thinking about the most inappropriate mistake I could possibly make, and then, um, making it. But I second Pistil's thought that you may not have come off as badly as you think! I can guarantee your interviewer has had worse experiences, and she may just have chalked your blunders up to nervousness and given you the benefit of the doubt.

I communicate well in writing, but I'm not so eloquent when I have to speak up, especially in an interview. Maybe it's the same for you? It may not have gone as bad as you thought and hopefully your interviewer will give as much consideration to your resume and cover letter (as long as the position you were interviewing for wasn't 'public speaker'.)

Interviews can be really tough and nerve wracking . One of the things I do is write down all of the questions I think they will ask and jot down points I want to mention for each question and then rehearse them until I remember all of the points. Good luck!
