Is Wearing Makeup at Work a Must?

I'm Asking: Is Wearing Makeup at Work a Must?

Some things are non-negotiable when you leave the house in the morning, and according to 51 percent of readers, wearing makeup to work is one of those a.m. must-dos. It was a tight split between those who said going to work without makeup is a do and those who declared it's a don't. What do you say — is wearing makeup at work a must?

I wear makeup every day to work, and I manage a recreation center. I have always worn at least my the essential foundation/mascara/concealer combo to work, even when I was a lifeguard getting up at 3:30am! But I love to do my makeup every morning, and it doesn't take too much time. So I think this depends a lot on personal preference.

at my old job, no... I would just toss on mascara and lip balm be done. But since I work more with the public at my new job, I do wear makeup everyday...somedays heavy and some days light but I always have something on.

Yes, I always wear makeup to work. I like looking polished and presentable and for me I personally need makeup to look/feel that way.

I think it depends on where you work. I'm still trying to decide. I think I look and feel a little better if I do (wear makeup).

I think it's really important to look your best so that it shows that you take yourself and your job seriously. I look fine without makeup, but I look prettier, more alert, and more polished with a little concealer, powder, and mascara, and this helps me look and feel my best, so that I am more confident and happy.

I think I've only gone to work makupeless one day, when I was so violently ill that I should have called in (and definitely did the next day). I don't think many of my female coworkers wear makeup, but I would feel so unfinished without it. Just some light blush, natural eyeshadow, mascara, and lipgloss is all I really need.

When I worked in retail I wore makeup a lot because I had to look presentable. Now, I'm stuck in a lab all day and I rarely, if ever, wear makeup to work.

About 80% of the time I do but if that is not your thing and you are confident with the way you look without it there is no reason it should be necessary.

I wear make-up ALL THE TIME. Not only when I'm at work. It's due to my type of skin, it needs CONSTANT touch-ups due to oiliness. It's very annoying but I've learned to accept it. I also like the way make-up makes me feel, more put-together and professional. I think that if you're lucky enough that you don't need it, then that's great...but I also think that make-up, when used wisely, can really flatter you and even make you look more professional.

I hardly ever wear make-up, and luckily I've never had a job where I have to wear make-up! At my current job, if you wear make-up it has to be "natural" and we can't wear eyeliner or anything...and I'm not going to spend precious sleeping in time putting on make-up that makes me look exactly the same!!

It depends on the situation and person. I wear minimal make-up but the need to look professional (dress and make-up) are very important.

depends on where you work for sure... at my office it's optional and i usually go without unless i know i have a meeting with someone from outside the office, but for my weekend job at the bar i always wear makeup... not quite as dramatic as i would to go out, but all my customers are done up so i'd stick out with a naked face :)

I work in a professional setting, and (subtle, natural) makeup is part of the image I need to project in order to look well-put together (along with well fitting, attractive and appropriate professional clothing and impeccable grooming). It's just part of the professional woman's "uniform".

I work in politics and image is (obviously) very important in my field, so it's all about balance. I wear primer, foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, mascara, and lip gloss every day. (I know, it sounds like a lot, but I have it so down pat that it takes less than 5 minutes.) It looks fresh and natural, yet pulled together. If I had more even skin tone or didn't have dark under eye circles, I would skip the foundation and concealer, but unfortunately I need them to look polished and awake! (I am one of those unlucky people who has dark under eye circles no matter how much sleep I get. It's genetic.)

Wearing make up/ fashionable clothing doesn't make you an "office snank." (wearing too much make up and clothes that are too short/ too tight/ too revealing might). I'm a prosecutor, and I feel like I nee to wear make up to work. It helps pull together my look and adds polish. I see judges, officers, defendants, and other attorneys, and I think I look better with some make up applied. I use bare minerals and add mascara and some blank liner.

MLH1, wearing makeup and fashionable clothes doesn't make you anywhere close to an "office skank". I wear makeup to work cuz I look like crap without it, esp. my undereye concealer since I always have dark circles. I've just worn makeup so long, I'd feel weird without it.

yes, I work within an office setting and feel it's important to keep yourself well put together

I have sensitive skin and don't wear make-up. I work in an office and while some people wear make-up here, others don't. It's definitely optional.

for me it's a must not like the same level of makeup i'd wear to a bar or out with friends but i do wear it every single day it's professional (in an office setting) so wear a little

I think it depends on where you work. If you're a personal trainer, then probably not. However, evaluating if you need it for an office job, or as a teacher, or as a fortune 500 company president is a must. If your skin needs touching up and the only way to get it done is through make up, then do it.
MLH1 MLH1 7 years
I wouldn't be taken seriously if I wore make up or trendy clothes. I am an engineer in a heavily male dominated field. If I resembled the office skanks, I would be treated like one. Make up and cute clothes are for the nights and weekends!

Not unless you visibly need it! I think you should give off the general impression that you care about your overall appearance, and if you can get that across without makeup, then lucky you!
Meike Meike 7 years
No, it's not a must. Sunblock and moisturizer do just fine. If I do put on make up, it's pretty light. Accentuate the beauty, don't cover it.
