What Did You Want to Do When You Grew Up?

I'm Asking: What Did You Want to Do When You Grew Up?

Whether we're totally aware of it or not, we're all pushed to think about our adult lives from a very young age. Forced journal entries and essays in grade school asked us to describe our job aspirations, and watching our parents go somewhere away from home each day made us think about what a job really was. If you were to peek back at those entries or memories, what would they say about what you wanted to do when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher. Then the reality of being in loud classrooms throughout childhood caught up with me, and I realized that the noise and the constant defiance would make me miserable! Now I dispatch ambulances. There's noise, but at least the crews listen to me. ;) My three year old daughter told me this: "I am going to be a big mom and have lots of girl babies, and stay home and play with babies all day, until it's time to get in the fire truck and squirt water on the fires." :D SAHM and volunteer firefighter?! SWEET!

I wanted to be a Judge since my older sister wanted to be lawyer, and I wanted to be in charge of her for once! I also wanted to be a waitress (because they were so nice and pretty), a chef, and a psychiatrist,

I went to Catholic school and I told my fifth grade teacher (a nun) that I wanted to be a saint. I was serious. She told me that saints are very good and I wasn't so good (I was one of those kids that was ALWAYS in trouble). So, I told her if I couldn't be a saint, then I was going to be a writer. I am neither these days, but think it's pretty funny when looking back.

I wanted to be a dancer, which I did become. I wanted to be a singer, which I did become. And I used to play 'secretary' and now do Office Management, since the dancing and singing didn't put a lot of food on the table, so it all fit into the scheme somehow.

As a child, I wanted to be a teacher, actress and cooking show host!? Then as I got older I wanted to be a TV reporter/anchor, but that dream was replaced with fashion magazine reporter. Now that I've actually had experience in the media I've decided that I really enjoy producing, particularly for radio and TV and writing feature pieces for print.

In kindergarten we had to draw pictures of what we wanted to be when we grew up. I drew a mom (which prickles my feminist sensibilities now!), but since then I've wanted to be a teacher, a jockey, a horse trainer, a dog trainer, a writer, a congresswoman, a political activist, a Nascar driver, a baseball GM, MLB Commissioner, the latest is a dietician. I work in insurance though. I keep telling myself it's off those student loans and save up a bunch of money and do what I really want. I'm getting there slowly!

A veterinarian or an archeologist. I am in school now for fashion merchandising but choose that over archeology because I figured I could find a job easier with a fashion degree (which I do LOVE by the way) but I am thinking of switching back to archeology. I am almost 26 and I still can't decide!!!!!!!!

I wanted to be a Nun, a ballerina, a teacher, a cashier (I had a neat little store set and I loved playing store), a secretary, model, actress, Veterinarian, RN like my Mom, lawyer, psychologist, wildlife biologist, photographer, journalist, writer, editor, own a Doggy Daycare, own a vegetarian restaurant, sociologist, FBI agent, pilot, escort, cosmetician, massage therapist, respiratory therapist, school counselor and more. I devoted a part of my life to each of these aspirations and never could decide which one I wanted to do. I think I truly have too much passion to chain down in one career.

I remember when I was 5 or so, the teacher asked us to draw what we wanted to be when we grow up. I had no idea what I wanted to be, so I drew a waitress. Haha. I wanted to be a (classical) archaeologist for years and years. My best friend's mother laughed and totally shot that idea down, making it sound like the worst idea ever. I'm still having a hard time forgiving the woman for making fun of my dream, because I still have moments of regret about not pursuing that.

when i was really young i wanted to be a teacher or a child psychologist and as i grew up i realized that i don't have patience for that type of work. then i decided that i wanted to be the press secretary for the US Government, and interned there and HATED it .... so i guess it goes to show that you can want to be something forever and end up on a completely different path.

In kindergarten I wanted to be a cow. After that, I always said I wanted to be a writer. I still am a writer, and I just took 6 months off from teaching to work on my book. No luck on becoming a cow, though,

Janis Joplin! The voice, the clothes, the awsome pictures, always wanted to be her! :P Then I went through an archaeologist (was fascinated with Egypt) stage, but still secretly hoping I'd be a Janis-like rockstar one day! Oh, and writer of course.

I wanted to be a writer and a teacher. I used to write mini books when I was small. I went to college and studied English. I hope to go to grad school someday and become a professor. But right now its the legal field for me.

I was just as lazy when I was little as I am now! I wanted to be a school bus driver because I figured I'd only have to work like... 2 hours a day. I'd pick kids up in the morning, take them to school, drop them back off in the afternoon and that'd be my whole day! Oh, and the occasion field trip. =P

For a long time it was a doctor. Then a comic book artist. Then a marine biologist. And finally a journalist. I'm an assistant editor at a magazine now.

Oh and I really wanted to be a writer! I used to write all the time when I was little, but I just don't do it anymore. Plus my confidence was kinda shot when Tisch(NYU) rejected me from their Dramatic Writing program :( And I also wanted to be a flight attendant for the longest time! haha, because I love traveling. But then I realized they really don't get paid much for all the crap they have to deal with and sometimes they have to lift passengers' suitcases to the overhead compartments and I could never physically do that... I can't even reach that high lol. And I wanted to be a commercial pilot! But I wear contacts(I don't know if I can get LASIK yet) and I would think there's some sort of height requirement!(I'm 4'11 lol). I prolly wouldn't fit into pilots clothes anyway haha.
