Your Two Cents: How Deep Is Your Debt?

While exploring resolutions that can help save money I learned the average American owes $8,329 in debt, according to a 2009 survey by The Nilson Report. No matter how you look at it, that's a lot of due cash, but still less than the average student loan debt of $10,000. How far in the red are you?

I just graduated and have $55-60K (uhhhg!) which is about average among my other recently graduated friends with loans. And that was at a moderately priced state school. I am happy to say that I don't have any credit card debt! I use my card for most purchases since I get reward points, but always pay it off.

I'm guessing this doesn't include mortgage, just CC debt, which i have around $4,000 worth. I am hopping to pay them off very soon.

About $5500 in credit cards, $5000 for hubby's motocross bike, and my dad just loaned us $3000 because hubby needed tools and things for his job. At least the last one is interest free! And I won't have any student loans because I'm going to a state school.

No student loans (thank goodness) but I owe about $4500-$5000 dollars in credit cards. I just got done paying off a loan for $10,000 that I used to pay off cards a couple of years ago. Die debt die!!!

Wow, I can't believe the average student loan debt is $10,000. Most of my friends have student loans starting at 20k! I'm really proud to graduate from a private college with ONLY $10k, and that took a lot of work. Other than my student loans, I have absolutely no debt. Since I took a paycut this year, and my company raised my health care deductible, I'm pretty happy that I cut back and didn't rely on my credit card!

Is this just unsecured debt? We have $25K left on a mortgage and about $10K total in student loans, but that's it.

Yeah, I agree that this sounds like credit card debt - not all debt.

That amount of debt CANNOT be right, unless it's JUST cc debt.

Yeah, I only have student loan debt, which is ridiculously high in the 6 figure range. But no car or credit card debt. i still don't understand why people charge on their cards if they don't have the money to pay it off. There are a few exceptions, but a person with a decent job shouldn't have credit card debt that high

I have no debt, but only because I'm too nervous about incurring debt to get a credit card. I know it's important to create 'good' credit but I just don't trust myself enough.
