Your Two Cents: What Was Your First Job?

Oh, memories. Not counting babysitting gigs, I was 16 when I had my very first job at a Jersey Shore restaurant. To give you an idea of the establishment, we had paper shoes at the front to give to customers sans footwear and people would come in at 2 a.m. (yes, we were still open) and order sundaes and pancakes. Most of my friends had similar jobs that initiated them to the world of paychecks and co-workers — what about you?

straight-commission, business-to-business, business phone-service sales for Bell South. The fact that I worked on commission. paid out-of-pocket for health insurance, and was financially independent from my parents at 22 gives me the self-empowerment and faith in my abilities & work-ethic to have gotten through the three job lay-offs since then.

Hahaha. Starter jackets! Had to laugh at that one.

My first job at 16 was at an Ace Hardware. My dad was furious about me working and told me he'd provide money for anything I could ever need or want, so there wasn't any reason for me to work. But I was determined to be "grown up" and work to have my own money (oh, and there was a crazy hot guy that worked in the nursery department that kind of spurred the urge - too bad he turned out to be a moron ...). I started off as a cashier, and eventually moved to the sales floor, then became a buyer, and at the end of my 4 years there, I was the office manager. I loved that job, and in fact, whenever I have a dream about a past job, it's always that one.

I was 10, I took a paper route around my block. I bought the first nintendo with all the games, roller blades, and my *awesome* NFL starter jacket that was sooo cool back in the day. :o)~ See what $100 a month got you in the late 80's?

Well my first job was interning at Florida Dept of Transpo. I went to a Magnet school for engineering in high School. When we were asked to fill out our applications for summer jobs in whatever field in engineering we wanted to "explore", i choose civil engineering. Instead of working outdoors(i was an outdoors person, still am)I ended up indoors with my mentor, some 26 year old chick who never wanted to teach me anything, so I ended up spending most of my time with the Office Manager, which I found out that summer I preferred organizing and ordering office supplies, learing about payroll and that sort of thing more to my liking than learning from the fresh out of school chick more concerned with her wardrobe than showing a 16 year the ropes. Its a wonder how I ended up in office admin. After that, I worked in a movie theater(popcorn smell never comes out!!!!), inventory clerk, and retail for about 3 months. Retail in Florida is not fun.

Other than babysitting, my first actual job was a cashier at a grocery store. It was great motivation to go to college so I could do something I really enjoyed!

I was a hostess at a cute little local restaurant called The Texas Belle. A lot of older people and wedding parties came in. What wasn't so cute was the cockroaches in the kitchens and swimming in the tea. I still can't drink tea from a restaurant.

DQ here.....but I didn't have to deal with any of the stuff like hamburgers, hot dogs, etc since we weren't a Brazier (according to my cheapskate boss). We were a Dairy Queen/Orange Julius store. People LOVED Orange Julius back in the early 90s.

I worked at a frozen custard shop and I didn't exactly have mint-chocolate chip dreams. Instead, I would come home at night covered in custard and then the next morning I would wake up with sticky and gross-smelling custard all over my arms. Not to mention that I had to wear a thick white button-up short-sleeved shirt with a bow tie. There were some good moments but after one season there, I had to move on. lol

I worked at a tree nursery when I was 14. Weeding beds of tree seedlings, picking tree seeds in the fall for sale, planting tree seeds in the summer, and sorting and measuring trees all winter. I worked there everyday after school, saturday's and all summer.

Cleaned office buildings on the weekend. The men's bathroom was so disgusting! I think it was because they were at a lawyers office and were pissed they had to pay so much - literally!
