Angelina Jolie: "You Still Won't Be Cool to Your Children No Matter What You Do"

Jun 4 2015 - 5:00am

Angelina Jolie [1] and Domhnall Gleeson, who starred in her film Unbroken, share an equal parts candid and funny conversation in Interview magazine's upcoming June/July Youth Wave issue. Case in point: Angelina's first question for the actor is, "So, what's it like to grow up in a normal family?"

Domhnall, who's probably still best known as Harry Potter [2]'s Bill Weasley, is poised for the biggest moment yet in his career, having landed a leading role in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. During their chat, he and Angelina talked about her surprising fandom for the franchise, their childhoods, and life in the spotlight. Read on for some of our favorite moments from the Q&A, and visit Interview Magazine [3] for the full interview — along with features on the issue's other two up-and-coming cover stars, Ex Machina's Alicia Vikander and Terminator Genisys actor Jai Courtney.

On Angelina's Dream Star Wars Role

Angelina Jolie: I'm personally a Boba Fett fan. [Gleeson laughs.]
Domhnall Gleeson: Well, you make a phone call and I'm pretty sure, Angie, that they'll have you in, in a second.
AJ: Can Boba Fett have a missus? Well, put in a good word for me, then.
DG: Could you imagine? "Hey, I'm calling to put in a good word for Angie."

On Valuing Privacy

AJ: I'm a very private person. I don't go out much. I'm home with kids. I go to work. I don't really like being the focus of attention, which is why I like being behind the camera more.

On Directing vs. Acting

AJ: My mom always wanted me to be an actor. And I started going to theater and going on auditions young. I only realized about five years ago that I actually didn't want to be an actor. . . . I grew up with my career being thrust upon me. It took me a long time to believe that I could do more than that one aspect of our business.

On Leaving a Legacy For Her Kids

AJ: The funny thing for you now having done this movie [Star Wars: Episode VII] is it will mean so much more to you when one day your little boy is watching it and looks at you in that different way.
DG: That is weird.
AJ: You still won't be cool to your children no matter what you do. But the Star Wars movies always have these beautiful messages and they are quite profound. And you will have this thing where, wherever you go in the world, you will be an artist and familiar to them.
