Okay, her outfit looks great. So she made a mistake with what her accessories said, but how many people other than her saw it and knew nothing? I couldn't tell you how many outfits I've seen that could say where to go in another language. To be sure it's a mistake she'll never make twice.

Zeke123, I'm glad to see an American bringing that stuff up. Every country has sensitivities about elements from their history, usually inflicted on them by other countries, but every person who visits that country isn't going to acknowledge that and be respectful of that and so, really, people just need to be less sensitive. If Cameron was just some random tourist this wouldn't be any kind of a big deal at all, just like, for me, it's not a big deal to see tourists wandering around in England football jerseys or with British flags on their t-shirts even though my country was occupied by Britain for hundreds of years. This is not comparable to her visiting, say Poland, with a swastika on her handbag simply because when you visit Germany you don't see stalls selling souvenirs eblazoned with swastikas everywhere you go. I've been to China several times and Mao is on evertyhing. Now, given how controlled the Chinese media is, I possibly know more about Chinese history than the people selling this stuff and so this never ceases to amaze me, but that's the way it is. And as Zeke points out, unlike a lot of South American conflicts, where the US are directly involved in instigating a revolt and installing a dictator, Mao (for all his evils) did not actually instigate the Shining Path movement so, even though it's beliefs are Moaoist, it's an internal conflict that Peruvians need to come to terms with themselves.

I'm glad she apologised.

Im sorry, but if you are traveling the world to educate other cultures and have a giant communistic star on your purse, and you are one of the most famous people in the world, you are a tad ignorant. This is a high profile person and I am not one bit surprised peoplw were offended, she should absolutly know better.
clepiau clepiau 10 years
I appreciate the fact that she was quick to apologize, and I don't hate her for her mistake, but as someone who is filming a documentary about Peru's culture, she really should have been more informed than she was. I don't know anything about the history of Peru's relationship with China (although I know more now than I did ten minutes ago), but I know enough to know not to romanticize Mao and I know that the star is recognized as a symbol of communism, which is a highly controversial form of government. It's not smart to go around glorifying it willy-nilly if you don't know anything about the culture you're visiting. She definitely should have known that and I hope she learns more about any cultures she hopes to educate us about in the future.

Irt of course, you and her don't know the history. I know that if she knew she wouldn't have used it . Yes, it was a honest mistake, but don't expect people to not comment on it specially qhen she's a celeb

Cameron made a mistake but was quick give what seems like a genuine apology, so I think her mistake is forgivable.

I don't know the history, she didn't either. Big freakin deal, she apologized so let's move on. Why do people love to make a huge deal about honest mistakes celebrities make? Get over it. I love her, she has a great fashion sense!

yes, I am sure she did not mean to offend anyone, but next time , I bet she will make sure to know what symbols she is representing when she wears them in a foriegn country. It is a learning experience.

Sashak - I'm with you. I don't understand how she could not know that a red star symbolizes communism everywhere. Especially, since she bought it in a communist country. That said, I wasn't aware of the history between China and Peru either. She obviously didn't mean to cause offense and quickly apologized. Everyone makes mistakes, and on the scale of things, this one seems easier to make than others. I'm more surprised that no one she worked on the show with thought to tell her that. Makes you wonder how unapproachable she is...

Miami Gal: Thank you for your statement. I really appreciate your words ans support. I feel somehow fortunate that me or any of my relatives were victim of terrorism, but I know people that suffered enormously because of the actions of this group. Yeah, as your neighbor may have told you those all that episode was very sad. Thank you again Miami Gal

I'll answer since someone addressed me: She should inform herself especially if she is supposed to "educate" others. I don't think she did it to be evil, I think she is a moron. And her apology. Some are ripping on the inadvertently being used. I think it was in the right context but I also don't believe that statement came from her. That word is way too big for her. She is sorry. Sorry for people being once again, offended by her stupidity. Furthermore, I am sorry you and yours had to go through that in Peru. My former neighbor was from there and I was pretty close to her. Her stories were very sad. Unfortunately, Mao and all that represents him hasn't yet earned the disrespect afforded to Hitler, who killed less than he did. Anyone who survives something like that gets a hats off from me, because it reminds me how lucky I am. Janeiro, I'm part Cuban and it is why I know about this. The star is used for all varieties of socialism, including communism, and is not exclusive to China.

Yes, that's right the red star is the symbol of communism and as the daughter of a Cuban she should definitely be well-schooled on the horrors of communism.

Miami Gal: Like I said in my post from teh other page. I'm Peruvian, and I was still living in my country when all that happened. I assume many people over there got upset because the terrorist group "Shining Path" got its ideas from Maoism. I am not going to talk about politics. Yes, she did a dumb mistake (probably her publicist's fault),and I would say she needs to inform herself more about history, and why she wears something and all the stuff that I was discussing with sashak few posts behind. I think she did good apologizing, and it sometimes is more the symbolism about Mao Zedong than the message itself.
sofico sofico 10 years
Well, actually I knew that the symbols or communism are the hammer and sickle. Many people also assume that the star is a symbol because is on China's flag, and China has been and still is comunist, so it's kind of a representation of the communism

lol MG! Cameron really needs to stop pretending she is some world traveler & just stay on the beach. Trippin' was a terrible excuse for an educational show. You'd get more real info off a cereal box

When I travel, I also do research on customs. It's not that hard to do. When I went to Egypt, I made sure I didn't bring shirts that showed my bare naked arms. I researched cultural sentitivities as well. That, as silly as it may seem, is considered very promiscuous and as a visitor, I wanted to show some respect for the culture. It wasn't that hard to research. Mao killed an estimated 70 to 100 million people. It is just sad to me that people don't know this about him. It is estimated he murdered more people than Hitler and Stalin put together. But I'll duck out. It is much worse to bash the pothead bimbo aka Cameron Diaz.

The star has been used for communism and socilism. Judgemental? YOu mean how this woman was judgemental about Americans? Like that? Seriously, she puts herself on a stage and she deserves it. How can someone educate others when that person doesn't have a clue either? She got slammed for her ignorance during her "trippin" show. If anything, she just added to the poor quality of information our youth gets. http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=%5CNation%5Carchive%5C200504%5CNAT20050422a.html I'm sure many of you would understand the disrespect of the swatsika but go ahead and call me judgemental of this pothead who basically showed the same type of disrespect to the Peruvians. It's offensive and she's an idiot. That is not judging, it is on display.

Cameron's manager should have prepped her on the protocal for her trip. It was an innocent mistake on her end that could have been avoided with a little bit of guidance.
