Cate Blanchett Might Just Spend 2016 Sewing and Fixing Cars, and We Love It

Cate Blanchett may have looked pristine in Marc Jacobs tonight as she picked up an honor at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, but apparently she has plans to get her hands dirty in the near future. The star, who was honored for her work in Carol, says she wants to take a break from acting in the year to come in favor of some more hands-on tasks. "I'd like to learn to do something, like, be able to fix a car or work a computer. You know, those basic things that a lot of people can do, but I can't," she told us on the red carpet. "I have a sewing machine — I hope I haven't lost the instruction manual — but I'd like to be able to learn how to use it."

Cate was honored alongside her costar Rooney Mara at the awards gala — which is often a great predictor of which stars will snag Golden Globes and Oscars.

Rooney, who was initially "terrified" to meet Cate, told us what really impressed her about the star. "She wasn't different than I expected. She lived up to everything that I expected. And I didn't realize how funny she would be," she said. "She's got an incredible, kind of Australian, wit about her. She's just a normal woman. She's down to earth."

If anyone needed further proof of that wicked sense of humor that Rooney referenced, Cate's acceptance speech provided it. After being introduced by her former Hanna costar Saoirse Ronan, Cate informed her, with a flip of her hair: "Thank you, Saoirse. You can get off the stage now. You're too young and talented and gorgeous."
