16 Times Celebrities Helped Regular People Pull Off Epic Marriage Proposals

Sep 25 2016 - 2:00am

Celebrities are no strangers to pulling off stunning marriage proposals themselves [1], but the ones they help arrange for fans and friends are sometimes even more incredible. Beyoncé recently helped her choreographer pop the question [2] to one of her tour dancers during "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," and Adele encouraged a woman to propose to her boyfriend [3] on this year's Leap Day, proving that A-listers sure know how to amp up the romance. After all, what's better than having the love of your life get down on one knee? Having Queen Bey stand next to you while it happens, of course.

Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell

During a photo op session at Salt Lake Comic Con in 2015, Captain America costars Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell were present when a man cosplaying as Chris's Marvel character popped the question to girlfriend Kelsey Jenkins, who was dressed as Black Widow. "Today at #SLCC15 in the middle of a photo op with Chris and I, a man got down on his knee and proposed with a ring to his girlfriend," Hayley wrote about the proposal in a now-deleted tweet [4]. "It was one of the most moving and beautiful things I have been witness to. Congratulations to you both. May you have a blissful future."

Justin Timberlake

We imagine it's hard to focus on anything other than Justin Timberlake [5] at one of his concerts, but a man in the audience had all eyes on him when the "Can't Stop the Feeling" [6] singer pulled him onstage during a Louisville, KY, tour stop in 2013 so he could propose to his girlfriend. She happily said "yes" with the support of thousands of screaming JT fans.

Beyoncé

During Bey's Formation World Tour concert in St. Louis this September, she helped her choreographer and creative director, John Silver, ask his longtime girlfriend to marry him. The lucky lady in question happened to be Beyoncé's dance captain, Ashley Everett, who got the surprise of a lifetime in the middle of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." The best part? Once she had the sparkler on her finger, Ashley absolutely nailed the rest of the "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" choreography.

The Cast of How I Met Your Mother

Die-hard How I Met Your Mother [7] fans might remember the moment in the season two finale when Robin mistakenly thinks Ted is proposing to her at dinner because of an engagement ring in her champagne glass, but it was actually meant for the couple sitting behind them. It turns out that wasn't a normal part of the episode — it was a real-life wedding proposal between Tim Russo and his very shocked girlfriend, Jana Rugan. Tim orchestrated the whole thing by telling Jana they were cast as extras, and then getting a staff writer on the show (who happened to be his close friend) to write the proposal into the finale. Now that's dedication.

Ed Sheeran

Thanks to heartbreaking hits like "Thinking Out Loud" [8] and "Photograph," it basically goes without saying that Ed Sheeran is a romantic [9]. It should come as no surprise, then, that he's helped out with tons and tons of proposals. From calling out a couple in the audience at his concert to recording a sweet and hilarious video message [10] for a fan, he knows the drill. That's why he was the perfect choice to help his friend, Rixton's Jake Roche, propose to Little Mix's Jesy Nelson during an acoustic performance of "Tenerife Sea" in Manchester in July 2015.

Aaron Paul

In December 2013, a man named Jason arranged a pretty elaborate proposal for his girlfriend, Jackie, which included a musical performance and an appearance by none other than Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul (her favorite actor!).

David Tennant

In March 2015, Doctor Who star David Tennant helped a proposal go down between two superfans at a Comic-Con in Raleigh, NC. His face pretty much says it all, right?

Sir Ian McKellan

Film director Brett Lotriet figured out the best way to ask for his Star Trek-loving boyfriend's hand in marriage: by having Sir Patrick Stewart record a supersweet video message for him! Sadly, Patrick wasn't available, but he was able to get the legendary actor's best friend, Sir Ian McKellan, to record the video instead. "Do the right thing," Ian says, before Brett holds up signs saying, "Will you marry me? I want to explore the universe with you." Swoon.

Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles dedicated her music video for "I Choose You" to helping two couples — Matt and Chelsea and Aly and Andrea — get engaged. As her sweet song plays in the background, the video documents the proposal process that Matt and Aly arranged for their significant others, and it's beyond heartwarming. To top it all off, Sara even shows up to both moments so she can sing a live performance of her song while Aly and Matt do their thing.

Lady Gaga

At Lady Gaga [11]'s October 2014 artRave: The ARTPOP Ball tour stop in Manchester, she helped her "incredible friend" Jay pop the question to his boyfriend, Shawn. After she led them both onstage and introduced them to the audience, Jay got down on one knee. After Shawn said "yes," Gaga gave them each a huge hug and serenaded them with a heartfelt rendition of "Born This Way." She also addressed the crowd with a touching message. "My record label, a long time ago, they told me that my show is 'too gay' and I was 'too gay' or this was 'too gay,'" she told them. "I told them, 'Well, it's a great thing that there are gay people all over the world!' Real human beings with real dreams and real stories and you deserve to love and express your love the same as everybody around the world. I wish you a beautiful love and happy marriage."

The Old Spice Guy

Isaiah Mustafa might be known for his chiseled abs and hilarious Old Spice ads, but the actor also helped a fan propose to his girlfriend. The shirtless [12] video message includes lines like "Your love has blossomed from a seed into a fully-grown love plant, and now it's time to fertilize that plant," and some suggestive eyebrows.

Mariah Carey

A massive Mariah Carey [13] fan told his boyfriend that they wouldn't be able to get married until he met the singer in person, and during one of her Las Vegas shows in 2009, he got his wish. His boyfriend brought him up onstage, asked him to marry him, and then shared a celebratory champagne toast with Mariah.

Adele

It's a tradition in Ireland on Leap Day for women to forgo gender roles and propose to their boyfriends instead of the other way around. Adele is well-aware of the fun custom, so to kick off her 25 world tour in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in March, the "When We Were Young" [14] singer helped a fan propose to her boyfriend on stage. Thanks to Adele's guiding hand, the man, named Neil, finally said yes.

TJ Miller, John Stamos, and Orlando Jones

When three hilarious actors tell you to marry someone, you don't really have a choice in the matter. At least, that's how JP was hoping his girlfriend, Huntleigh, would feel after watching her favorite TV stars help him propose via video message in 2014.

Zach Braff

Matt Hulbert called in reinforcements in July 2013 to help him propose to his girlfriend, Janice, in the form of Scrubs star Zach Braff [15]. The actor narrates a cute video for Janice, which also includes messages from her friends and family.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan

In March 2014, Doctor Who costars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan thought they were about to pose for a normal photo with a couple at the Wizard World St. Louis Comic-Con when the man suddenly got down on one knee. His girlfriend tearfully said yes as Matt and Karen excitedly applauded and cheered her on.
