After their late father won his third Grammy Award [1] on Sunday night, Chris Cornell's two children took the stage during the nontelevised portion of the ceremony to accept the musician's posthumous award on his behalf [2]. Cornell, who was previously the lead singer of bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, died by suicide in May 2017 [3] at the age of 52. Sunday night saw him earning the Grammy for best rock performance [4] for the song "When Bad Does Good," which was featured on an album of previously unreleased music that dropped over a year after his death.
"I never thought we'd be standing here without my dad, and I'm sure he would be proud and honored," Christopher Cornell, 13, said of his father. "He was known for many things. He is a rock icon, the godfather of grunge, and the creator of a movement whose contribution to music history made a lasting impact across genres and generations."
Cornell's 14-year-old daughter, Toni [5], added, "His voice was his vision, and his music was his peace. Thank you so much to the recording academy, Universal Music Group, Ron Laffitte, Brent Smith, Michael Cooper, and thank you to our mom: his love, his muse, and his savior, who continues to carry out our father's legacy. And a huge thank you to his fans for the loud love and support. This is for you daddy, we love you so much."
