Do You Accept Miley's Non-Apology?

Do You Accept Miley's Non-Apology?

Miley Cyrus made headlines once again this week after another controversial photo of the starlet was leaked on the Internet. Many people are upset about the photo's racist implications towards Asians, so Miley responded to the situation on her fansite. She wrote,

"I've also been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, I'm sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context! In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy? It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me. If that would of [sic] been anyone else, it would of been overlooked! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new 'BAD GIRL'! I feel like now that Britney is back on top of her game again, they need someone to pick on! Lucky me!"

This sounds more like an excuse than an apology, so tell us — do you accept Miley's non-apology?

seriously who cares about this? why is this even a big deal and why are people getting so upset about it??? she could be making a "high" face because when you get stoned your eyes get really squinty.........

She's not a goofy or funny person. So when she makes an "asian" face claiming that it's "goofy" it's racist. If she was a stand up comedian, who makes fun of all racists equally, or someone that is just hilarious to watch all the time (like Steve Carell) than she is not racist. But clearly she's not a comedian, or goofy. She's racist.

This reminds me. I was in an international school in South Korea, and there I met a friend from China. He told me and the rest of the group of friends who came from different countries about racism towards him while he was living and studying in Russia. There some people (and 'school friends') would come to him and slant their eyes, then laugh as if it's the funniest joke in the century. He told this story in a light tone while rolling his eyes, so perhaps instead of being truly hurt he's closer to being annoyed. Still, it seemed like what ticked him the most was that too many people didn't realize how offensive that action is. To have your physical/racial characteristic mocked is surely not a walk in a beautiful park. I and a few other friends were appalled and mostly surprised by this story, because we didn't know that people make fun of Chinese (or other people with slanted eyes) people in that particular way, although we immediately understood how horrible that action was. The other friends weren't surprised because some people did exactly the same in their countries as well. I don't understand why people would do such thing to begin with, or even worse, wouldn't stop doing that once they found out that it is rude. I truly don't mean to poke at Russia, as I said turned out it happened in other European countries, the States and other countries as well. My point is, I guess, that it is indeed offensive, some Asian people find it offensive, and the gesture has indeed been used by non-Asian to mock Asian people with slanted eyes (I'm Asian but nobody would call my eyes slanted, my 'people' have darker skin and big eyes, so to be honest I think the word 'Asian' is a bit too generalized in this Miley-gate but oh well ). To say it isn't offensive would be just like a sexual harasser saying 'I'm just groping them for fun, no offense/harassment intended'. I don't think she should apologize for her PRIVATE photos, though. This thing is awkward and unpleasant all around.

i have to admit i am very disappointed in the way miley handled this. if you aren’t going to apologize, then just shut up. don’t whine about how people are “picking” on you. she’s not a baby, she’s 16 and she should realize that there is a line between what is appropriate and what is offensive. she's very well aware of how she is in the spotlight and i'm sure she LOVES it until she does something stupid and is confronted by it. she claims she was making a “goofy face.” so asian features are considered goofy? she has offended many people, and if she wants the respect and support of others, then she has to learn to respect and be more understanding towards them as well.

with all that money and time in the "spotlight," you would think that she would know (or be told) the difference between "would OF" and the correct "would HAVE." Good one, Miley.

This was just silly. Yes there are bigger things in the world that's why I don;t care about the stupid ones like this. And each country and culture has a definition of what is racist and what is not. If the kid is Koren, and not Korean American, he might not give a hoot about it. Black women in Central and South America would never be offended at being called "negra" and it's in fact a term you call someone you care about. Same with "china".

I want to know how making goofy faces could be construed as making fun of someone's ethnicity.

I just think it is ridiculous that you become racist when you do something another person does not like. When I grew up, people made fun of themselves ALL the time, pretty much because they don't take themselves seriously and don't care. If people want to call me a "cracker" or make fun of my "typical american girl" looks -- then I don't care. There are some people that do, but you can't put a girl on the chopping block because what she does in her private life, and for doing something that was not meant to hurt anyone. But, I stick by what I said before. It's hard for anyone to do anything, no matter the race, because everything you do can somehow translate into you being racist. I've seen it happen almost everyday to someone because a person of a different race decided that the other party was being racist. It's a very hot button issue for me because I see true racism all the'd be surprised how other races treat ME because I am white -- and it's obvious when they make comments about me being white -- not subtle.

hmmm this is the same 15 year who has her boyfriend living with her (and problem on birth control) so her parents gravy train won't try up... shes no longer just a little girl that is naive about her behavior

This is ridiculous, can we please stop stalking 15 year old girls and judging them on there every little move and calling them whores? It's just disgusting. She had an Asian friend in the picture. IMO unless this kid is seriously self loathing, to call this racist would be blowing it waaay out of context and proportion.

She's the new "bad girl" so she'll have to get used to issuing apologies.

i agree that people were making too much of a big deal out of this. but Miley has to realize that slanting your eyes is offensive some people. and that it's a a sign of mocking asians. she's 16 years old and should know better. the average 10 year old can tell you it's offensive to slant your eyes like that.

Miley is being stupid. She was also mocking fish, too. There were other photos of her pouting, doing those fish lips. This girl is out of control! :)

I don't understand why several commenters here are like, "Oh who cares about this, there are so many bigger things going on in the world, like Darfur, blah blah blah." Know what? Pretty much EVERYTHING pales in comparison to the situation in Darfur. Does that mean that nothing else matters, though? Give me a freaking break. Sometimes seemingly "small" things can be important, too. Her attempts to cover her ass are ridiculous. Sixteen is not young enough to excuse such stupid behavior. Youth also isn't an excuse for her level of ignorance. She knows she's in the public eye...maybe she should start acting like it and show a little class for once in her damn life.

This little girl needs a slap. And, that is exactly what she is a silly little girl. But she has to realize that she is always in the public eye, so behave already!

It may not be racist, but it sure is stupid. Cmon, how can you not know such a gesture is considered mocking to Asians? And if you know it, why do it? Just because you did it when you were young, doesnt make it okay. The Spanish basketball team did it, they are stupid. The Spanish womens tennis team did it, they are stupid. And her "apology" tops it off. Either be sincere or dont do it at all.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a Russell Peter's race joke like many people but he pokes fun at different races equally (and it's usually self-deprecating). What I don't like about Miley's joke is that in her statement she equates goofy with Asian features and doesn't even realize it. I don't think she's racist but I do think that she's an insensitive idiot of a kid as are the rest of her friends in that photo. That boy in the red shirt is actually more offensive to me than Miley. He's not just squinting his eyes but depicting a rude caricature of Asians.

I agree with those of you who are saying she just shouldn't apologize if she isn't sorry. It's fine if she doesn't feel bad, whatever. Just don't come out with this stupid "I'm sorry if people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context" comment. No one's "taking them wrong."
