Does the Royal Family Watch TV? The Answer Might Surprise You

Sep 5 2019 - 3:10pm

The royal family frequently appears at charitable events, dresses up for balcony photo ops [1], and even travels overseas [2] for work, so how do they unwind once their official duties are done for the day? It looks like their evening routine isn't that far off from ours — they watch TV! It's been confirmed that many of them have, in fact, seen The Crown [3], but it might surprise you that they also have a taste for reality television. And no, the royal bunch have yet to comment on whether they've caught up on Suits since former actress Meghan Markle [4] joined the family. Read ahead for details on the shows they do reportedly enjoy.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

During a 2017 appearance on BBC's Radio 1 [5], Kate and William revealed that they're fans of Homeland and Game of Thrones and that they like to catch up on TV after their kids are in bed. The duo also shared that Prince George and Princess Charlotte are into children's shows like Farmer Sam and Peppa Pig.

In 2015, Kate visited the set of Downton Abbey [6], which she apparently forced William to watch with her [7] after the birth of Prince George.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

Yes, the queen herself has seen The Crown [8] (though Prince Philip apparently isn't a fan), but that's not the only royal show she's into. Her Majesty reportedly also enjoys Downton Abbey [9] and specifically looks for historical inaccuracies while viewing.

But just because she's a serious monarch doesn't mean she can't enjoy a little mindless TV — the queen was apparently into The X-Factor [10] and had her staff record it so she could watch the following day.

Princess Eugenie

The Crown is a hit with many royals, and that includes Princess Eugenie. She shared in 2017 that she's "proud to watch it [11]."

Prince Charles and Camilla

The heir to the throne and his wife enjoy a little TV time as well, with Gardeners' World and other nature programs [12] at the top of their list. Cooking fits in too since Camilla's son, Tom Parker Bowles, hosted the British cooking show Market Kitchen between 2007 and 2010.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Having left her own TV show to marry into the royal family, it's no surprise that Meghan and Harry enjoy relaxing with their series' recordings. Harry is said to be a fan of Britain's Got Talent [13] as well as The X-Factor. And reality competitions seem to be their cup of tea, since they also enjoy The Voice Kids [14] and even met one of the contestants during a visit to London's Royal Albert Hall in April.

Zara and Mike Tindall

The queen's granddaughter Zara and her husband, Mike, have forgone their royal titles, but they're still into the drama. They're apparently "addicted" to The Crown [15] but also enjoy the entertainment of Strictly Come Dancing. At one point, Zara was rumored to be joining the competition [16], though she's so far only been spotted in the audience.
