It's been just over two months since 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed by a police officer [1] in Ferguson, MO, and over the past few days, more than a thousand people gathered in the city to protest. The planned Weekend of Resistance was part of a movement called Ferguson October [2], which protesters organized as an effort to speak out against police brutality. Along with Brown's tragic death this past August, another black St. Louis teen named Vonderrit Myers was killed [3] by a police officer last week, prompting more protests throughout the city.

On what the Ferguson October movement dubbed Moral Monday, protesters and clergy leaders marched from a church to the Ferguson police department, and during one of the demonstrations, prominent activist and author Dr. Cornel West was arrested [4] along with 10 clergy leaders and other activists who were also taken into custody. This weekend's protests come two weeks after the city's police chief apologized [5] to the Brown family in a video announcement, saying, "No one, who has not experienced the loss of a child, can understand what you're feeling.
