When a French President Has an Affair, His Approval Rating Goes Up

Jan 14 2014 - 12:30pm

To be fair, he had nowhere to go but up. French President Francois Hollande is currently extremely unpopular, but when reports broke that he is cheating on his longterm partner, Valérie Trierweiler, with much younger actress Julie Gayet earlier this month, he saw a small increase in his approval ratings. And while only 24 percent of the public approves of his job, 77 percent say his love life is his own business. At a press conference today [1], Hollande said, "These are painful moments, but I have one principle: private affairs are dealt with in private. This is not the place nor the time to do this." He also declined to answer questions about whether Trierweiler was still the country's first lady, which came up, since they are not married.

The French might not mind unfaithful politicians, but the details of the affair are catching international attention. The magazine Closer was the first to report on the story, and since then, the details sound like something that could only happen in France.

At a press conference on Tuesday, President Hollande declined to answer questions about the affair but did confirm that he was going through a difficult personal time.

Hollande's longtime partner, Valérie Trierweiler, 48, often makes official state appearances. Here she was with Michelle Obama [2] in Chicago in 2012. She and the president are expected to visit the US next month for an official state visit that includes a state dinner. Currently there is no word on whether she will still come.

Meanwhile, actress Julie Gayet, 41, is reportedly the president's mistress. She has long been tied to left-wing politics, and she appeared in a 2012 video supporting Hollande's candidacy.

Valerie Trierweiler, a journalist, and President Hollande have been together since 2007 when Hollande reportedly left his partner of 30 years for her.

Ségolène Royal, pictured here, ran for president before Hollande and lost to Nicolas Sarkozy. She and Hollande have four children together and were together for 30 years.

Closer broke the story of the affair after months of speculation.
