Has The MTV Video Music Awards Lost Its Edge?

The MTV VMAs are just a few hours away and most of you are excited about Britney's comeback performance. That being said, there aren't many other big moments that we can feel coming on, and that seems to have been the case for the past few years. The VMAs were once packed with surprises, stunts and scandal, but these days it all feels very G-rated and even boring. What do you think - has the VMAs lost its edge?

Its Lost its Edge, and i will tell you why. THere isnt any videos played anymore, Few artists put out videos because they dont get played, and what is left is the usual suspects, and the stars of all the reality tv that MTV cranks out, and "reality" they are boring. Most of the creative edge MTV had is gone, in its place is the vanilla scented wannabes

the VMAs were never shocking and fun. they've always been annoying and lame and now they are even moreso as the station itself has grown increasingly annoying and irrelevant.

The show was so boring. And I didn't particularly like this years venue. Everything seemed to be so scattered, and the stages were so uninteresting.

When they have to pour alcohol down the celebs throats during a live show to attempt to make things interesting...that's just pathetic. MTV tries to hard, which makes it LAME

I was just saying this to my roomie while's just so boring. Half the time I was like, wtf? Seriously, though..were those considered performances when the bands played in the hotel rooms and MTV only showed a verse of the songs? Anyway..yeah..definitely not worth watching. The most exciting part was wondering where Rihanna got her beautiful dress from. And Chris Brown's dancing. Hot.

They suck more every year! Less music, less awards, NOT EVEN A PODIUM!!! Come on! 5 years ago they were something to look forward, time to go to Blockbuster....

Maybe when Rock N Roll comes back in style, music will start being interesting and shocking people again. Until then it's just a bunch of spoiled twits running around with too much money. And Rap Suuuuucks!

It's so slow and boring. It's really seems out of control with all the ad-lib nonsense. It's pretty amateur this year. What a shame. Rihanna's performances were the only highlight and even they were not what you'd expect for a big live show in Vegas...mtv's fault not her's.

I'm going to Tivo the show. I will watch the opening (Brit) to see whet happens. The rest I will watch later and fast forward through most of it. I do want to see Linkin Park!

No, it never had an edge to lose. This is the most edited, planned, re-aired show in the history of blah.

Oh, to answer the question: I guess I could've picked the first answer, but I chose "Other". The VMAs used to be fun, when I was a teenager. Now they are no longer fun for me, because I am no longer a teenager.

I haven't tuned in to the VMAs in years -- not since Madonna's cone-bra days -- just caught clips here and there. I remember seeing a clip of the Madonna/Britney/Christina kissing thing. Back then Britney was the "pure" one and Christina was the "trashy" one. Wow, how things change. I'll be tuning in tonight just to see Brit. If she does well, I'll enjoy it. If she does poorly, I'll enjoy that, too. So, it's a win-win situation for me. I'll probably switch over to football after Brit because I could care less about most of the "musicians" MTV tries to promote.

it's all about $$$$ and less about the music. the stunts are all overscripted now.

mtv has taken the "v" out of "vma" now. what a shame. i read recently that fewer artists are producing videos, and most are low-budget projects intended for web-only play. sigh... i miss the days of major videos like "thriller".

I'm looking forward to Brit's performance.
