Hilary Swank Blames Substance Abuse for Divorce

Poor Chad. He already had to deal with a more successful brother and 2 time Oscar winning wife. Now he has to deal with her blabbing his substance abuse problem to Vanity Fair. Once again the magazine scores a tell-all interview. People reports:

"I knew something was happening but I didn't know what," Swank tells Vanity Fair magazine. She also says her ex has been fighting his problem for years, and he is sober now. She does not name what substance he abused.

But, she says in excerpts from the interview obtained by the New York Post, "When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me. And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid."

She goes on to say, "I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors. But that just kind of blew it open. It made me look at things a lot deeper. That's when you realize it's not going to work."

I actually never really liked them together. They just didn't match but I still hate to see another Hollywood marriage end.

Like we care why they broke up! She did not have to say these things and make her personal life public knowledge. How much did she get paid? Now her husband is gonna come up with some soppy story about Hilary... here we go!!!!! bleh

Wow, her stock just plummeted in my opinion. I've never liked her, but at least I respected her. Not so much anymore. I don't doubt that the whole thing was extremely difficult on her and I'm not trying to deny her pain, but like others have said, this is the type of thing you share with friends, family, therapists, etc. The only reason celebs give interviews to magazines is to get publicity. And for her to (apparently) not even consider how completely humiliating this *very* public revelation must be for Chad is just awful. What a sucky thing for her to do.

Well, I'd leave an alcoholic or drug abuser to be quite honest, but that is totally airing dirty laundry. It's human for her to want to say why, but her publicist should learn to prep her.

DWG, I will be at your polls because that's the only way I'm getting through another hour of work. I think Hilary is trying to avoid paying out a lot of spousal support to Chad because while they were married she won 2 Oscars and he pretty much only did guest spots on TV shows.

i had totally forgot that they were ever married. i guess i am a bad person.

Was it really necessary to talk about that now? I mean they were already divorcing and each had gone their ways...hmmmm...

Hilary I am shocked....I expected better from you...she has gone WAAAAYYY down in my estimation for this because she doesn't want to give him too much maintanence?? or almoney.??..not sure what you call it in the US

Pretty slimey, Hilary. I thought you had more class than that. I, too, would be quite irritated if I was Chad. She just did not need to say that. I believe she's trying to come off as the victim, here. She said there were "other things" that contributed to the break-up, but is implying that those things were his fault, too. Another example of how celebs whine about their lack of privacy, but invite the whole world into their lives anyway.

Who would have thought ... Guess they aren't going to be friends afterall ... Divorce is never a walk in the park ... Divorce with Dignity doesn't exist in Hollywood ... Haaaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!!!! What's Chad going to do, he has no career, does he ???

Yeah, why bring it up now? Not like anyones paying THAT much attention to it. Sad.

Sure she should be allowed to talk about it. With her friends. Her family. Her therapist. But not the casual readers of Vanity Fair. It's not her story to tell. It's not her issue anymore - she left (and more power to her for leaving a situation that she felt she needed to, before it became more her problem). "Outing" his substance abuse problem was a crappy thing to do and reeks of a "parting shot" at the man who hurt her. And this too is the voice of experience.

mle called it! what on earth is vanity fair feeding them and slipping in their drinks?
My-Opinion My-Opinion 11 years
I hear ya caesar~ yes talk about it with your 'addicted' loved one and possibly the help that hopefully they'll get but don't announce it to the world., that was just stupid of her*

bassetread - That's what I was thinking too! (About the thwarting his recovery) She essentially just called every future boss of his and told them his problem. Good luck getting jobs now! (Of course, its not like he was really working before this, was he?) Still.

I agree with Jennifer - share that with your close friends, support groups, shout it at your christmas party. Get all the support you need - but why throw your "best friend" under the bus in an international magazine. There are plenty of forums out there that will allow you process and grieve. I respected them for keeping thins close to the belt - so this really disappoints me. I can't imagine it is good for Chad's recovery either.

caesar I couldnt have said it better myself. the lucky ones are the ones that get past the point of denial.

I hear what you're saying, Caesar. And certainly she should be allowed to talk about her experience with people close to her. But, broadcasting it to the world through the pages of Vanity Fair seems a little different to me. I guess it seems like a publicity bid to me. But, every other celeb is out there talking about their tragic childhood or eating disorder or past addiction or hateful family or well, you get the idea...:) So, I guess why not this too?

i usually love her but you dont air dirty laundry in public unless you are the one with the problem. granted it is everyone's problem that is involved but that was tacky. so sad! at the same time i feel for the girl. i know what it is like to love someone with a drug habit. unfortunate for all parties involved!

Voice of experience here, people: unless you lived with an addict, you have NO idea how devastating it is. she should be allowed to talk about how it affected her -- one of the keys to enabling the addict is when you continue to NOT talk about it or act like it never happened. I am sure it must have been very difficult for her as well as Chad. As for her not knowing about it: addicts are EXPERTS at hiding and manipulation. and if you have not had much experience with addicts prior to your relationship with one, it can take YEARS to pinpoint the problem. Hilary may have been going through a certain amount of denial, or even naivete (yes, in Hollywood it can happen, too).

I wouldn't shout out to the world if my hus. had problems like that, of course he 'don't' but i'm just sayin' especially if i were a celebrity cause quite possibly the 'world' does know about her man now., that was pretty stupid of her....although i do like her acting, i don't think she'd like it too much if he dicided to tell the world about some of her deepest secrets. STUPID GIRL*

Ya know, she didn't even need to say one was really questioning their divorce, although people did wonder why. It's not like she's constantly in the spotlight, like Britney, and would be forced to give a reason why.

It is tacky that she went out in an interview to say that he has drugs problems. She should have kept that between herself and her husband. No one else.
FxyTexan FxyTexan 11 years
She should have kept her mouth closed. There's just some things you don't have to talk about. Anything for a little publicity!
