How Many Grandchildren Does Queen Elizabeth II Have? A Guide to Her Royal Family Tree

May 16 2018 - 11:20am

Queen Elizabeth II may be the monarch [1] of England, but when it comes to her family life, she's a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. Elizabeth wed Prince Philip [2] in November 1947, and they welcomed four children together: Princess Anne, Princes Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. At 92 years old, Elizabeth has a total of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Keep reading to get caught up on all of the queen's grandchildren and the sweetest things they've said about her.

Peter Phillips, 40

Princess Anne and Mark Phillip's only son is the queen's first grandchild. In an article he wrote for The Telegraph about the Patron's Lunch in 2016, Peter opened up about his special bond [4] with his grandmother. "I've always been very close to my grandmother, and we speak often," he wrote. "She has been an inspirational person throughout my life, so to be able to do something like this for her is an honor."

Zara Tindall, 37

Princess Anne and Mark Phillips's equestrian daughter [5] is Elizabeth's oldest granddaughter. In May 2013, Zara called her grandmother "an inspiration" and attributed her can-do attitude to the queen [6]. "When you've got such inspirational ladies in your family, it's kind of hard not to be like that," she said.

Prince William, 35

Up next is Prince Charles and Princess Diana's oldest son, William. In addition to accompanying his grandmother to some of her royal engagements, Elizabeth has been training William to be king [7] all of his life. He's even described her as "the best role model I could have."

Prince Harry, 33

Prince Charles and Princess Diana's second child has a unique bond with the queen. When Diana died [8] in 1997, Elizabeth protected him and William [9] from the press by "deliberately removing the newspapers" so they "didn't know what was going on." However, when Harry was asked to describe their dynamic [10] in a 2016 interview, Harry said he still views Elizabeth "more as the queen" than his grandmother.

Princess Beatrice, 29

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's eldest daughter is the queen's fifth grandchild. In an interview with Hello! magazine in October 2017, Beatrice listed the queen as one of her role models [11]. "I find my grandmother inspiring every day because her overwhelming sense of duty is linked with an overwhelming curiosity," she explained. "Every day she's curious to learn something new, to do something new, and I think that at 91 years old, she goes out into the community with a genuine curiosity as to how she can be a force for good in the world. She also looks for ways in which she can inspire communities, and I admire the way that she works so hard."

Princess Eugenie, 28

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's youngest daughter got engaged [12] to longtime love Jack Brooksbank in January 2018, and the queen was actually one of the first people [13] to find out. "Granny actually knew right at the very beginning, she was one of the few people who knew," Eugenie said during an interview with BBC's The One Show. "She was very happy, as was my grandfather."

Lady Louise, 14

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex's daughter is the queen's youngest granddaughter. However, Louise didn't realize that her grandmother was the Queen [14] of England until a couple of years ago. "For Louise, actually, it was much more of a shock to the system," Sophie said in a 2016 interview with BBC's Louise Minchin. "It was only when she was coming home from school and saying, 'Mummy, people keep on telling me that grandma is the queen.' And I asked her, 'Yes, how does that make you feel?' And she said, 'I don't understand.' I don't think she had grasped that perhaps there was only one queen."

James, Viscount Severn, 10

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex's only son is the queen's youngest grandchild. In 2016, he was featured in Elizabeth's official 90th birthday portraits [15] alongside his sister, Louise, and the queen's five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Isla, Mia Tindall, Princess Charlotte, and Prince George.
