James Franco Talks Oscars in Playboy

James Franco Finally Talks Oscars — Makes Sense or Poor Excuses?

James Franco sat down for an interview with Playboy for its upcoming issue, and the actor had a lot to say about his Oscars hosting experience. He hasn't opened up about the criticism that his performance received until now, though his cohost, Anne Hathaway, recently shared her thoughts on the experience in Harper's Bazaar, saying, "In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." James had this to say:

"As far as having low energy or seeming as though I wasn't into it or was too cool for it, I thought, okay, Anne is going the enthusiastic route. I've been trained as an actor to respond to circumstances, to the people I'm working with, and not to force anything. So I thought I would be the straight man and she could be the other, and that's how I was trying to do those lines. I felt kind of trapped in that material. I felt, This is not my boat. I'm just a passenger, but I'm going down and there's no way out."

So tell us what you think: does James's explanation make sense or is he just giving poor excuses for his performance?

he's a character actor and people thought this would make him a good host...not so much....he does need to stop talking about it, I like him b/c he's odd, not his hosting abilities - move on

Damn, just when I'd forgotten all about it! Steve Martin & Leslie Nielsen (miss him) have/had the ability to say hilarious lines, with perfect timing while never cracking up & showing more life then a rock on the ground. - But he did the best with what was given him... not much as it turned out. No, the Oscars need a host with certain skills to carry off a 3+ hour show like Billy Crystal, Steve Martin & Whoopi Goldberg come to mind right off. But I wonder what it would be like with skilled "fresh blood" - Neil Patrick Harris, perhaps? Excellent hosting the Tony Awards! - I just don't think he & Hathaway should get the blame here... in so much as they were asked, & accepted graciously, a gig obviously wrong for them. The PRODUCERS screwed up royally & hid behind Franco & Hathaway being ridiculed by the press & fans.

He needs to stop talking about this because it just makes him look like a douche. lool @ trained to respond to circumstances. What exactly did he respond to while he was up there? The man was sleeping!

His performance was awful. His "training" apparently failed him.
