Jenny's cause is not anti-vaccine, but she thinks children are getting too many at once and at a young age. Also, she has been very clear in stating that there is no 'cure'. I haven't followed everything she believes but she has made those points abundantly clear in here interviews that I have seen. Her passion is remarkable- she HAS lived with this and speaks for her child with a loud voice- kudos to her and other parents and supporters! The more attention to this the better.

swangeese, what is your beef with jenny? i agree with your comment that there is no "recovery" from autism, but not much else. as for your "shit happens" comment, are you trying to be insulting? i speak for someone who can't speak for herself anymore because of vaccines and i know hundreds of other parents who do the same. our children are "broken", they suffer. listen to a 4 year old scream for 7 hours at a time like a torture victim while trying to claw and bite themself bloody black and blue and then tell me otherwise. your experience is NOTHING like the experience of families of the severely autistic. in fact, other than having no theory of mind what is it that puts you on the spectrum?

I cannot even fathom how much your life must change when you have a child with autism or other mental or physical challenges, but there has been a lot of solid scientific evidence that has completely debunked the idea that childhood vaccination and autism are linked. Plus there's the sketchiness of the original UK researcher that reported that there was a link; he had received a lot of his research money from an organization trying to prove that autism was caused by vaccination. I'm a researcher in the area of immunology and vaccines and I'm 100% in favour of ethical, safe vaccinations and medical interventions with alternatives for special cases but the evidence that autism and vaccines are linked just isn't there. Plus the drawbacks of people not vaccinating their children are gigantic! Please, please, please if you have children don't only look into the groups that campaign against vaccination, find the counterbalancing data and views that support vaccination.

I'm tired of Jenny McCarthy and her like-minded ilk promoting woo about autism. The mercury preservative was not only removed from childhood vaccines (it's in the flu, but there is an alternative), but science has also failed to find a link between thimerosal and autism. A recent California study showed that despite thimerosal being removed in 2001, autism rates in the state continued to increase. Since the mercury preservative isn't to blame, the anti-vaccination crowd is now moving the goalposts and adopting a trendy "green" exterior. Truth is, they do not want any vaccines green or not and will scaremonger people with unscientific ancedotes and scary names. Much like creationism, nothing they offer is based on sound science or is horribly distorted in order to fit their beliefs. Unfortunately people listen and preventable diseases are now making a comeback. I realize that people want something to blame, but sometimes shit just happens. A lot of studies are pointing to a genetic basis for autism. And the 'epidemic' of autism is likely due to awareness and the disorder being redefined and broadened. I'm almost 31 and I wasn't properly diagnosed until about 2005. When I was younger, there was no spectrum and you either had 'classical' Kanner's autism or you didn't have it all. As an autistic person, I also find Jenny McCarthy's attitude towards autistic people repulsive and patronizing. Despite how she believes, autistic people aren't broken. However I do realize that her attitude is prevalent in the autism charity biz. Unfortunately these groups are parent dominated and have no regard to the autistic people they supposedly help. Certainly parents should have support and a voice, but a neurotypical person talking about the autistic experience is like a white person talking about what it's like to be black in America. Oh and if I ever have kids, they will all be vaccinated. Unless your child is a special medical case, it is negligent to not vaccinate. In any case, there is no autism recovery like Jenny and these groups claim. Functioning can improve and a child may learn to pass as a neurotypical, but you can't chelate, pill, or ABA away autism. However that's a topic for another thread. LOL The blogs Left Brain/Right Brain and Respectful Insolence do a great job in debunking the woo surrounding autism. I'm sure there are others, but those are the two I know of.

I agree with you snowbunny. Small Pox was almost eliminated until a group of people in Colorado refused to vaccinate their children, after 12 yrs and traveling, one of their children developed it and it started spreading again. Ignorance when it comes to children's health is truly IGNORANT.

Good for them for standing up for something that they believe in! I think that was a harsh comment snowbunny, especially after people have been sharing their experiences with autisim.

I love them both, but jenny needs to calm down on the eyeshadow or whatever she is putting on her eyelids, it makes her look ghoulish

I think they are cute, but this is NOT a good cause in my opinion. There has been enough research already showing that there is no correlation between vaccinations and autism, and this sort of ignorance discourages people from getting their children vaccinated! I can't believe so many people think this is a good cause!!!

This is such an enlightened couple. Jenny's a firecracker and Jim's a gem for not being afraid to embrace all aspects of her life...many would cut-and-run in the face of a child with a disability. Jim jumped in with both feet and, as a result, "learned how to love." Awesome!

i love all three of my children but the love i have for my son who has cerebal palsy is different it is a love that i could not explain, but that does not take away any love that i have for my two daughters, no one will really know that love unless you have a child with special needs, i too am lucky to have found a man that came into my life and accepted my children especially my son most men would not even think twice with normal children can you imagine one with special needs, but my son made my fiancee the man he is and he will tell people it took my son to know true love yes he loves my daughters too but that is a different love that he has for him, he has no bilogical children which was a big plus, likety split what is the name of that song

it also seems like since him and jenny started dating, you see him out with his daughter more too. its great they've adapted to a non-traditional family, and its great the support he has for jenny and her son as well.

when children are severely autistic they literally give nothing back. sometimes they don't even respond to their environment, not to touch, sound, light, etc. to love someone that can't give back, that isn't capable of giving back is a different kind of love than most people experience. love is usually give and take and with typically developing children you see your efforts rewarded almost immediately. you do peak-a-boo, baby does peak-a-boo. you stick out your tounge to a baby and it will do the same back to you. but with the severely autistic children often there is literally no return on your efforts for months at a time, other than being able to comfort yourself with the knowledge that you tired. the parents, siblings, teachers and caregivers that love these children know what it is to love unconditionally, to just love and not expect anything back. my oldest daughter is severely autistic. her younger sisters love her and accept her in a way that amazes me. there was a song in the movie "step up" that i think sums up what it is to have a special needs child. some of the lyrics are "Sometimes in life, You run across a love unknown, Without a reason, it seems like you, belong. Hold on Dear Life, Don’t go off running from what’s new, I became somebody, through loving you."
