Yes, Kim Kardashian Is Studying to Become a Lawyer: "If I Knew More, I Could Do More"

Kim Kardashian's career is taking another unexpected turn. For someone often criticized for not having an easily definable job, the reality-star-turned-entrepreneur is currently studying to become a lawyer. She shared the news in Vogue's May 2019 issue. "First year of law school, you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts, and contracts. To me, torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring, and crim law I can do in my sleep," Kim said. She also got a perfect score on her first test.

The announcement is certainly unexpected, but one could argue it runs in her family, given that her late father, Robert Kardashian, was an attorney. Kim has also taken an interest in criminal justice reform over the last year, and famously met with Donald Trump in May 2018 to seek clemency for Alice Marie Johnson, who had been serving a life sentence for a first-time nonviolent drug offense.

Kim said there were many who tried to sway her against visiting the White House, to which she replied, "It's my reputation over someone's life?" Kim added, "Weigh that out. People talk sh*t about me all day long. It will just be another story about me versus someone getting their life back."

Not only did Kim succeed, but she went on to play a major role in the First Step Act, which was signed into law in December 2018. The piece of prison reform legislation aims to reduce recidivism, or the chance that a formerly incarcerated person might go on to break the law again. "I never in a million years thought we would get to the point of getting laws passed," Kim said. "That was really a turning point for me."

Kim's foray into law, however, also made her realize she needed to educate herself further. "I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more," she said. So, Kim began working with prison reform group #cut50, and also started a four-year apprenticeship with a San Francisco law firm. She's due to take her first-year law exam — referred to as the "baby bar" — this Summer, with the goal of taking the bar exam in 2022.
