Laverne Cox was the guest of honor at Madame Tussauds in San Francisco on Friday. The actress and activist became the first-ever transgender star [1] to get a wax figure displayed in the legendary exhibit, and the unveiling also helped kick off gay pride festivities in the city. Laverne shared an Instagram photo [2] from the event, saying, "Next to my wax figure at #madametussauds in San Francisco. Does she look like me? #TransIsBeautiful." For the record, the wax figure does really look like her — see more uncanny versions of celebrity wax figures [3].
Laverne's exciting milestone came just days after she hit the stage at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom [4] for an impressive performance at Broadway Bares, which brings together some of today's hottest stars to raise awareness and money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Laverne also flexed her philanthropic muscles at the amfAR Inspiration Gala last week and gave a moving speech that inspired fellow transgender star Caitlyn Jenner [5]. Caitlyn reached out to the Orange Is the New Black [6] star via Twitter, saying, "Your support means the world. Thank you for all that you do for the community."
