I have an issue with public school lunches. My middle school daughter is only allowed 10 minutes for lunch each day and my elementary children are only given 15 minutes for lunch. I do not think that can be contributing to a health lifestyle for my children. My 12 year-old daughter suffers from terrible acid reflux on a daily basis. I think this is because of how fast she must consume her food every day. These ridiculous time restraints are not teaching my children to eat healthy. They are simply forcing them to each as much as they can as fast as they can, which we all know can lead to obesity down the line. I have addressed this issue with the school's PTA (which I have been a very active board member for the past 15 years), the school administration, and the district school board. The only responses I have ever gotten is that, "It must not be a problem because no one else has ever complained about it in the past 17 years, and besides the school needs to get those children out of the lunch room so they can clean up the tables for the next set of kids that are coming to lunch in 10 minutes." There must be a better answer than this. The health of my children is more important than that. With this type of training and conditioning in the public school system, we are setting our children up for a generation of health problems.
