Is Nicole Already Getting Special Treatment?

Yesterday we told you that Nicole's request for a continuance was denied, but that decision has already been reversed and the court date has been pushed back to August 16. This turnaround seems a little fast in our opinion, especially since the date is now 11 days later than Nicole had originally asked for. We know that situations with court dates and legal matters are often changing on a day-to-day basis, but do you think Nicole is already getting special treatment?

if she does need to serve time, how many days? isn't it 5 or something? if it's only 5, then why did paris get longer? aren't what they did similar in a way? haha. sorry, so many questions.

I think she's getting special treatment for being a pregnant celeb and not just a celeb. The courts don't want to look cruel in such a public way.

The idea of Nicole Richie having a baby is frightening.

Having worked as a legal aide in an attorney's office and having to ask for extensions for things from judges, it depends on the judges, as well as the attorney's calendars. Much as I would like to sit here and lord over the fact that another no talent do nothing "celebutant", who is only famous because her Father is, is getting special treatment, I will say it may just be as simple as it being the first available date for everyone involved.

People constantly file motions for continuations for many reasons. I don't think it's special treatment but I'm sure her celebrity does help.

Isn't she trying to plea bargain. Maybe, just maybe her lawyer has legitimate reasons for asking for a continuance. Also, sometimes there are more important crimes that need attention first, so the lesser ones get pushed back.

no. legal things get moved around. if anything, the legal system is incredibly wary of giving the rich and/or famous special treatment, esp. in l.a. and ny. she's pregnant and really, they should give her probation. unless the heroin thing from before was a legal matter and she was charged an adult. then, there really is no option but to imprison her. paris supposedly got released for not eating or drinking (she was afraid of guards taking picture of her doing #1 or 2). nicole should be out of there in no time considering that she just doesn't eat or drink when a camera isn't around.

What Nicole did was much more dangerous than what Paris did. Paris was driving on the right side of the road; Paris had some drinks - Nicole was on Dope and Vicodin(sp?)! Why should Nicole get off easy? Pregnant women go to jail too. Yes what Paris did wasn't safe and she broke the law but Nicole definitely would have killed someone if another car was coming, Paris had a better chance of not hitting someone. Nicole should not get any special treatment.

I'm not a huge Nicole Richie fan, but my husband is a lawyer and I know that continuances are very common. It's actually rare not to have/need one. An acquaintance of mine who is awaiting her court date for a DUI has had, like, six continuances already. Sometimes it's not the defendant's doing, it's the lawyer who may not have their stuff all together yet. Anyway, like everyone else said, we'll wait to see until she actually appears in court.

i'll fall into the ask me again after the sentencing category. but i do know for a fact that dates quite frequently get pushed back numerous times before going to trial, even the day before a court date. i've seen it happen several times. so as far as that goes, no, i don't think she's getting special treatment.

i don't know if her celebrity is causing special treatment or if it is the baby...or if she's getting it all. sounds like this needs more info as the story unfolds...

Well, Paris certainly got special treatment- oh poor her she did serve some time but she only served 23 days of her 45 day sentence. And I assume that Nicole will get special treatment, even if it's just for her being pregnant, which isn't the only reason she'll get special treatment.

at this point i don't think she's getting special treatment. if her expert wasn't available for her original court date, then a continuance is perfectly acceptable. the court is not going to postpone her hearing unless she has a good reason. besides, i think this is just the first continuance she's asked for. i think we'll have to wait and see what sentence she is given to determine if she's getting special treatment. i do think the pregnancy will come into play with the decision, though, especially if she's in a fragile condition at sentencing time.

I really don't think any non-celebrity would get their trial pushed back so many times, therefore she is getting special treatment no matter what the later outcome may be.

it's all luck of the draw. Paris got screwed. Even normal everyday people with as clean a past as hers would not have had to serve as much as she did. Nicole may get lucky or may get screwed... just like anyone who ends up in front of a judge.
