Photos of Angelina Jolie At Refugee Camp in Baghdad, Iraq

Angelina Stops Off In Baghdad Before Being Honored in Jordan

Angelina Jolie arrived in Baghdad, Iraq today to visit and speak with refugees as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. She was spotted earlier this week leaving LA with Maddox, so he's along to get a firsthand look at his mom's activist side in the middle east. Angelina's day trip to Baghdad comes before she is scheduled to attend the 24th annual Arab Children's Congress in Amman, Jordan, which also begins today. The actress will be honored at the event for her charity work around the world and will apparently be staying with her friend, Her Majesty Queen Noor. Angelina's commitment to displaced people has brought her all over the world and this time she has her oldest son with her to watch as she is applauded for her work.

Clearly some people find it easier to just blather on than to actually read a few facts. From the UNIICEF website: What qualifies a singer, an actor or an athlete to represent UNICEF? And what good can celebrities really do? UNICEF’s celebrities have a wide range of talents and achievements, but they all share a commitment to improving the lives of children worldwide. And in each case a celebrity’s association with UNICEF comes about because he or she has already demonstrated that commitment. Fame has some clear benefits in certain roles with UNICEF. Celebrities attract attention, so they are in a position to focus the world’s eyes on the needs of children, both in their own countries and by visiting field projects and emergency programmes abroad. They can make direct representations to those with the power to effect change. They can use their talents and fame to fundraise and advocate for children and support UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child’s right to health, education, equality and protection. UNICEF was the first of many ‘causes’ to enlist the help of celebrities. Danny Kaye pioneered the role of Ambassador-at-Large in 1954; it was taken on by Audrey Hepburn and others, building up into the current distinguished roster of international, regional and national goodwill ambassadors

I have seen photos of Richard Gere, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, etc on trips and publicizing their causes. Frankly Angelina's trips get covered more just because it's her. People are not as interested in Richard Gere as they are in Angelina Jolie, Madonna, etc. Angelina does not take tabloids with her on these trips. It's usually just a UN camera and 1 or 2 news organizations like CNN or the Associated Press. She didn't ruin anybody's marriage. If she had an affair with Brad, why isn't he responsible? How shocking that a Hollywood actor had drug problems. It's funny how people like Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey, Jr, and even Britney Spears can change their lives but the haters say Angelina can't and is a fake.

Her movie is coming the next year, 2010. Try again. Angie is only doing her work: UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

It seems like people think she just hopped on the bandwagon when the truth is she hopped on nearly a decade ago and Brad Pitt, george Clooney, Madonna all jumped on the bandwagon because they see the press she gets. Clooney and Pitt were doing charity work before they met Jolie. I just recently saw a documentary about ALS that included images of them doing fundraising for Project A.L.S. starting in the late 90s. Clooney and Damon have been very high profile with Darfur, but the current conflict started in 2003, so you can't fault them for not working on it sooner. And really, Clooney was not that big of a star until he got onto ER. He was on a lot of failed TV series prior, so it's only about a decade that Damon, Clooney and Pitt had the big bucks and clout to be more effective spokesmen for causes. That's true of many celebs: Paul Newman, Audrey Hepburn and others did their most active charity work after 40, once their careers were well established. Angelina just happens to be one of the few to be so active at a younger age. Most charities try to get celebs because it makes a big difference in donations and volunteer recruitment.

It sad that people have bad words to say for good deeds done.Let me tell you something, I'd rather watch this "photo-ops" from every celebrity including humanitarian work than photo-ops including shopping, drinking and other stupid things. And how does this help??? Oh it helps a lot my friends.I'm resident at third world country, and believe me,by allowing this photos of her to come out she managed, lets say roughly, 1000 people worldwide to acknowledge that there is problem in Iraq or any other country. 500 from those 1000 will be interested to find out more about the problem. If only 10 from those say,hey what can I do to help, then that is great impact. I would give everything that some star of that caliber decides to come to my country that honestly most of the world doesn't know that exists or what problems does it have.So next time you decide to spit on humanitarian just think about that. And I never understood why is she the evil beach. Because she is with Brad?? Please.

Along with Doctors without Borders is Engineers without Borders (they provide engineering services to create necessary infrastructure such as drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment) and Water For People (another engineering nonprofit that goes into 3rd world countries and teaches communities about sanitation, how to treat water so that it is potable and provides the equipment and training so that once they leave, the community is self sufficient.

I think it's great to bring attention to bad situations such as Darfur and the refugee camps in the middle east. I understand why Celebrities are used since they can garner such a high profile. BUT, to give celebrities awards for doing something they should be doing in the first place, I disagree with. I sort of feel that if you are a celebrity, you have a responsibility to provide a good role model and because of the power that comes with being a celebrity, you should put that power to good use, such as drawing attention to worthy causes. So I think it's great when celebrities such as Aneglina, Clooney, Pitt, Aguilera (huge cancer research and battered women's advocate) and many other celebrities help bring attention to a cause. I just don't think they should get special awards for it. Instead call shame on all the celebrities who aren't doing good work.

Really, there is no need to bash Jennifer Aniston on this thread. Aniston does her own form of charity work, mainly with St. Jude's Hospital, which is a great charity!!! I applaud Angelina Jolie for the work that she does in these grief stricken countries. Mass exoduses (specifically forced) are a tragedy that can affect a family and a country for years down the line.
