Reese Witherspoon Beats the Odds, but Can't Beat Angelina

Reese Witherspoon took the stage at the Beat the Odds Awards sponsored by The Children's Defense Fund, joined by a handful of other celebs in LA Thursday night. She's been busy promoting Four Christmases but it must have been nice to take a break and start getting into the spirit of giving back. Her romantic comedy has been a hit at the box office so far, proving that Reese deserves her spot as the third highest paid actress in Hollywood. She's down two slots from taking the title last year, thanks to Angelina at No. 1 and Julia Roberts at No. 2, but having a hit movie at the end of 2008 sounds like the perfect way to climb back to the top next year.

I don't know who votes on these, but Reese could act circles around Angie. Of course, Reese keeps to herself more, doesn't put her kids in the limelight as much, so maybe that's it. She's not so exposed so she doesn't make as much. somehow, I doubt she loses sleep at night because of it.

Reese maybe a sweetheart but she has zero international appeal. Most people don't even know her name outside the US. Angelina and Julia, on the otherhand are REAL international stars, they can draw hits by their name only on the international scene.

I will much rather pay to see a movie with Reese than with Angelina. Reese is class all the way and a much better actress imo.

I'm glad that Angelina is #1 - I love her films. I like Julia and Reese too, but Julia hasn't made a movie in forever (besides Duplicity) and Reese hasn't had a good movie in awhile. Four Christmases was awful.

Angelina Jolie deserves every penny - and gives a huge amount back! Both Jolie and Pitt have contributed millions of dollars each to various charities and funds, including Global Action for Children and Doctors Without Borders. Jolie was named as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 and has travelled the world in support of various missions to troubled areas. In 2003 Angelina was the first recipient of the new Citizen of the World Award by the United Nations Correspondents Association, and in 2005 was awarded the Global Humanitarian Award. Jolie has also pledged $5 million to set up a wildlife sanctuary. Angelina Jolie is not too distant from a real-life Lara Croft - philanthropic adventurer swooping through life and impressing most who see her!

And while we are talking about ridiculous incomes.. can we add people who are paid to play a sport they love? Football I can maybe understand due to injuries that can cause them to be in pain the rest of their life..but still come on.. Take baseball.. I really think they should make the pay like $200,000 a year and then a bonus for every stolen base, every home run, every run into the wall to catch the ball, every out.. and then apply it to all sports somehow... And make a deal with the entertainment industry.. take a pay cut if we enact severe rules and regulations to paparazzi and make them join a union with rules and background checks, and credentials and marked cars and distance rules and penalties for breaking the rules... LOL! Yeah right!

LOL! Thanks.. and I would LOVE to take credit for the breakdown.. but I pulled the info straight from the Hollywood Reporter website.. that is the breakdown they gave of the why.... all I actually wrote was the part.. Its an odd list... Oprah, Jolie, Tina Fey and Miley Cyrus were the only actress' to make the Entertainments Top Powerful Woman 100 list.. the rest is cut and paste.. :) I am not that great of a writer or quite so sarcastic about some of the actress'! But thanks for thinking I could be! :)

Yeay - I like Reese, Julia, and all the others in the list except for the Fraud at # 8. I'm happy for Angelina - she deserves to be # 1

How some of these actors get paid so much, including Reese Witherspoon, is beyond me. I just don't see her as that big of a box office draw, but I'm clearly mistaken about that.

I also have never understood how the economy is so bad, and yet these celebs can still pull in that much money!

Quills, I feel ya. They can't all be Viggo Mortensen, who is in it for the art of film-making...

I don't disagree that $10-$25 million dollars per movie, + back end, is ridiculous, but films gross so much money, who else should get it? Directors, producers, etc. all make decent wages on top movies too. I'd like to see the writers get more for their work. Of course it would be nice if they lowered the ticket prices and everyone worked for less, but I don't think that will be happening, even though it would probably bring more people into the theaters.

Audrey ~ sorry, I never saw your post until now. We were on the same train of thought it seems, but I listed a breakdown of years ago when there was still the 20 million dollar/film actor. I see what you are saying, but it's still too much money. When an actor blurts out in an interview that they chose to make the high budget, crappy film, simply to make a large paycheck (when they are already established and have a body of work that has paid well), it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. On one hand, they speak of their absolute love and devotion to the craft and on the other hand, they make crap to get a fatter wallet. I have to admit, I'm really out of the loop these days. I don't follow the entertainment industry like I used to, way before the blogs came out. Even before the internet became overly popular. I saw the love of the film become the love of the big mighty dollar, and it ruined it for me...forever. So the only site I actually check now is Pop & CNN for my buzz.

Hahaha ~ your idea sounds great. krae85. I'm in! You are right, the studios make a lot of coin. I'd love to see a breakdown for the last couple of years. I know years ago I read a top actor's salary breakdown, almost to justify their inflated paychecks. It broke down their salary and how they CHOSE to disperse it. Such as assistants, PR reps, security (personal), drivers, advisors & other staff directly related to their profession. It then broke down other expenses such as homes, other staff (maids, chefs, trainers, hairdressers, make-up artists, etc). Not everyone does nor needs to have such a large team surrounding them. It's how they or their advisors choose to spend the $$. Still way too much. There is amazing talent out there who can barely make rent. I wish this large talent pool out was actually dipped into a lot more.

Considering how all of us on here are consumed with loving and hating other celebs, Quills, making that much money makes sense. They need to have lawyers, bodyguards, drivers, nannies & special outings paid for with those millions because we (the public) are just sooooooooooo consumed with the gossip. They need that money to have a home theatre, a home bowling alley and whatever else "MTV Cribs" showed us. Paparazzi know this. TV execs know this, and--boom!--a million reality TV shows. It's our fault! We buy People, US Weekly and the other 20 magazines out there. Bloggers are now famous. It's crazy but true.... Julia Roberts gets by on her Pretty Woman image as much as Angelina Jolie gets by on her talent (and the ability to be one of the few female stars who will do action movies, including her own stunts). Reese is simply wonderful. For me, my top 3 are Angelina, Reese and Keira Knightley.

quills, I agree they're over-paid but the movies make A LOT of money!! It'd be interesting to break down and see what kind of percentage the actors are getting of ticket/dvd sales. I have an idea, make me celebrity and I'll give 80% of my pay to charity! sounds good, eh?
Quills Quills 8 years
Omg who are we kidding (not Pop, but the actual industry as a whole)?? There is NO reason ANY actor on the big or small screen should even come close to that level of salary. Millions for a movie, or a million(ish) per episode (cough cough ~ Friends/Raymond/Frasier) is ridiculous. It completely sours the actual craft of entertaining & has tarnished my love of filmmaking I've had since the young age of 4. I'm know I'm not alone in that opinion. Ugh. I think they (this list, for example) are all overpaid, so IMO, some ego-boosting (or crushing) list is a bunch of fluff. Now ~ Reese looks wonderful here. Tall (good camera angle - hehe), lean & tight ~ completely works for her. I love her hair at this length the best. She is class all the way.

Nicely articulated Jatra. I was thinking... well I guess Reese can't beat Julia either, (this year anyway.) They are all such different actresses that I don't anticipate them competing against each other for roles. They are all just trying to do work they find interesting and fulfilling, not to outsell one another at the box office.
Ginger Ginger 8 years
Great breakdown Ima. Pay actually does equal worth to studio execs who are measuring by box office draw. Jolie and Julia can still bring in a #1 box office movie pretty consistently. Not including their artsy or limited release ones of course. Speaking of.. when the heck is Fireflies in the Garden coming out??? Impressive cast, but the delays make me wonder if it's not expected to be good. From Ima's top 8, I think only the top 3 have won academy awards. So the slew of other actresses who have won academy awards don't make the big bucks.

I like Reese a lot, she is a sweetheart and I loved her movie (4 Christmases) but I think Angelina deserve 1# she worked hard for it. Congrats to Angelina, Reese and the rest of the ladies. There is room in Hollywood for all of these ladies. It's so funny how this site try to pit any one against Angelina Jolie. I guess the triangle is going strong with the writes here. Congrats to all the women that made the list. Good job these ladies are awesome.
