Find Out More About the Russia Today Anchor Who Quit on Live TV

Mar 6 2014 - 10:40am

News anchor Liz Wahl made news herself this week, when she quit on live TV. For over two years, Liz has worked in the DC bureau of Russia Today America, a cable outlet funded by the Russian government to improve Russia's image abroad. Other countries have similar services, including the US's Voice of America, which broadcasts news in 45 languages around the world to promote American values. But despite being aware of RT's pro-Russia editorial mission, Liz says the propaganda nature of the network became overwhelming in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine.

She said this on air:

"I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth. And that is why, after this newscast, I'm resigning."

Many are applauding the reporter for calling out the deceptive Russian leadership. Liz's grandparents came to the US as Hungarian refugees fleeing Soviet aggression, and she said working for the very popular Russian outlet presented too many ethical and moral challenges. Her interviews were heavily edited, and she found herself self-censoring. Ahead of her dramatic resignation, she also tweeted about her grandparents:

Just spoke to grandparents who came to US as refugees escaping Soviets during Hungarian revolution. Amazing to hear amid new Cold War fears

For its part, Russia Today called her move a "self-promotional stunt" and released a statement on Thursday:

"When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional."

Do you think her move was courageous?
