Following the news that she was stepping back from her relationship [3] with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez is taking a little time for herself. The 25-year-old singer was recently photographed vacationing on a yacht in Sydney [4] with friends. It marked the first time Selena was photographed in a bikini following her extremely difficult kidney transplant [5] last year. Now, she's using the moment to share an important message about body image and the perception of perfection.
On March 20, Selena shared a video [6] with intimate footage from her ongoing trip. She captioned the video, "The beauty myth — an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of flawless beauty." Adding, "I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone."
This isn't the first time Selena has spoken out about societal pressure and expectations. In 2015, Selena shared a picture of herself lounging by a pool in Mexico [8] with the caption, "I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove."
