Tiger Woods Announces Indefinite Hiatus From Professional Golf — Are You Surprised?

In the wake of all the Tiger Woods drama and growing number of alleged mistresses, the world's most famous golfer announced that he will be taking a break from the sport. He's been hiding out since his post-Thanksgiving car accident cracked open the image of his perfect life and marriage. Since then it's been impossible to avoid all the headlines, women, and news stories about Tiger. His latest statement on his website reads:

"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."

So tell us — are you surprised that Tiger announced this break from golf?

Before the age of web technology with cell phone photos, emails and text, Tigers infidelities would have never made a murmur. Yes, what he did was wrong but only to his family not us. Tiger never endorsed his personal life it was always about GOLF. The sponsors did not paid for his clean cut image it was about being number one golfer in the world. Yes, Tiger made money from that but the sponsors made much more. We are the ones that bought the image, an image he never sold. The problem is that we were duped and we are angry for our naivete. This is a very private matter between his wife Elin, Tiger and if he believes, God. The PGA will certainly suffer from his absence and they are carefully planning their next move. As we continue to be mesmerize by this story we should remember that it is a very private matter. I do not think that any one of us would like this type of intrusion in our own lives. This has gotten so out of control as even to say that he is a racist since none of the women were black. That is cruel, crazy and stupid. TMZ and other computer tabloids are like vultures circling the wounded prey and we are wringing our hands to get the next piece of meat. How about the w*ores that saved all the email and textms is it because they "loved" Tiger or where they setting him up? Blame him yes but they also knew he was married but of course that doesn't matter since we are not cruxifying them. Most women are ripping Tiger apart as if he was unfaithful to all women. No, ladies he was unfaithful only to his wife and if she chooses to stay with him that is also her decision and none of us are entitled to judge either one of them. Here is the last word. This is a private matter let it go there is a lot more important issues at hand.

Tiger is not Elin's "meal ticket." That woman is a gorgeous former model. Without him, she's gonna do just fiiiiiiiiiiine.

he needs to handle his personal shyt, it's not like he's not a billionaire and won't be able to pay his bills...he has what 13 girls now? it's disgusting and quite frankly, I don't ever need to see his mug selling my husband deodorant or razors again...disappear, go away, shoo

He didn't use condoms? That's disgusting. What a s*******, who in the right mind would do that to his wife?

I feel so badly for Elin and her sweet babies.I wish them all the best. I hope she heals soon and is able to move on with her life and put this whole horrible scandal behind her. As for Tiger I'm not surprised at all about his announcement .He's definitely got much bigger problems to deal with. He's a ginormous selfish piece of sh*t. IMO.........

No, and I think it's a good idea. Doing well in golf takes an enormous amount of concentration, and I think Tiger is distracted to say the least. :)

If he had a "real" or "regular" job he wouldn't be able to take an indefinite hiatus from work just because he cheated on his wife and is a complete scumbag. That bugs me. But it's the nature of the beast I guess.

It's hard to believe that his marriage will survive this. Where was his concern for his wife and children and their privacy when he was with all these different women? He got caught and now it's all about damage control. The man has some serious issues.

I voted YES, but not because I'm "shocked he is letting this affect his career." I definitely think he is making the right choice and I hope he does exactly what he says.

the statement seemed really sincere. what he did was beyond wrong, but if he truly is ready to work on himself and get to the root of his issues, then i'm not judging him and i wish him the best of luck.

I agree with a lot that's been said. I don't think he's being that sincere and it's more for his image than anything. I feel really bad for his family, it isn't easy to go through this in public. I just can't believe that Tiger is sincere about wanting to work on his marriage. He didn't have one affair, he constantly cheated on his wife and had no remorse. ufh

I was surprised, I thought his wife would just leave him and he would get to work. It's not like he cares about her so I don't see the big deal to him. He is just sorry he got caught. I hope she doesn't stay with him, it would be such a bad example to her children.

I say yes and no. Yes because it was the money that made him feel powerful and for him to give that up surprises me. Then No because he has obvious issues and needs extensive therapy and counseling.
