Time To Help

You know you want to start those new year's resolutions right now. It's time to kick off the new year doing good and here is a great way to get involved. We were amazed to hear the shocking survival story of Kati Kim and her two daughters, 4-year old Penelope and seven-month old Sabine. However, we were deeply saddened by the news that her husband James, CNET editor and SF local did not make it back to his family alive. Now you can help by bidding on Kim Family Benefit art + craft auction. Bid often now. Feel better later.

How sad... hopefully the auction will go really really good. ______________________________________ \Don't chase the beat of your heart/

It's a nice gesture, but if you read the details on the link and the auctions, there is nothing to indicate that the Kim family has asked or agreed to these auctions in their name. It sounds like some well-intended people took it upon themselves. There is a memorial fund set up by friends of the family, but that's not a non-profit org, so donations are not tax deductible, which is why they can't make any mention of it in the eBay auctions. The web page for the family which their friends maintain doesn't mention the auctions either. The family has asked that people stop sending gifts and toys for their girls because they have more than they need, and instead donate those to shelters or toys for tots. By all accounts they are gracious people who will do the right thing. I'm wonder if they even know these auctions are going on.

This is so sad. People can chose to give their own money to whomever they want in this world.

flutterpie - I agree - I am appalled at the comments here questioning the "need" they may or may not have. There is not amount of money that repair the damage this family has suffered and if the only way we can offer any comfort and show them some support it so make a donation then so be it. If you want to make a donation to a cause you feel is more worthy then by all means, everyone needs support - but to question if they actually need this based on their situation is, to say the least, in poor taste. Sorry for the rant - I am huge fan of this site and the people on it.

im sorry but to the naysayers, do you understand that this family was in a car for five days not knowing if they were going to live or die, not only do they have to deal with that kind of trauma but then knowing that their father/husband died trying to save their lives while they ended up living. the mother must be a freakin basket case at this point. how dare you point your finger and say she isnt deserving enough because her dad is a doctor? how about you go sit in a car for five days and have your life completely changed? i know he thinks you're fine and stuff but does he know how to wind you up?

There are many families in which a mother or father has died but because their story wasn't deemed attention worthy by news outlets receive no attention or help. I understand how much it hurts to lose someone and how you can't force someone to help or not help when they do or don't want to. BUT, they have resources (family, education, insurance, employment...) that others do not. Hopefully, if this family does make it with the kindness of others, they will share the wealth - so to speak.

Living in SF is expensive and did he have life insurance. I have two kids in the bay area and with my husband it would be so emotionaly and financially horrible.

princis11....ITA means "I totally agree", and although more wordy than it needed to be, its what my post was saying. Some think they know the family's situation based on the outer, but that shouldn't stop anyone from helping if they feel compelled to.

It is a really sad story, and looking at the prices those auctions are getting so far, lots of people were pretty moved by it. But I can also understand why some people aren't inclined to donate to a family who lives in a neighborhood where you can't touch a small 2 bedroom starter home for under a million dollars. Needy is kind of a relative point.

I am such a nerd, but what does ITA mean? my point was that we don't really know their situation, and the wife's family set it up, not the wife herself. There are two specific funds for the girls' college educations. It takes a lot to raise a family, and if I were this woman or her family I would be doing everything I could to make sure they get every possible opportunity, as I'm sure every family in need does. There are tons of people in need all around the world and so many worthy causes. But to say that this situation is somehow unworthy is a little short sighted in my opinion.

:( It was very hard to follow this story each day, hoping for a happy ending and there never being one. My prayers go out to their family.

That story was/is so heartbreaking. :( I couldn't imagine anything ever happening to my husband - I don't think I could get through that.

This is so heartbreaking. I can't imagine how that Mama will raise those kids without their Daddy. This is one story from last year that really broke my heart.

princis11, ITA. A stranger asked me for some money the other day and I told them when I came back out of the store I'd hook him up. He kept wanting to tell me what he was going to use it for, but I told him that it wasn't my business to know. I'm not responsible for that, I'm only responsible for doing what I feel led to do, and if I have to know how it's to be utilized then that may cause me to start judging, overthinking, and deciding that the person isn't worthy in *my* opinion. Point is, if someone is led to help, it shouldn't matter what the recipient has already. I have no idea if that man was rich or poor, or if I was buying him dinner or a drink and I don't want to know. I believe we're led to help for a variety of reasons, and as a spirtual person, and at certain times I'm even more "spirit led" about some things. I don't dig in my pocket at every request, but sometimes there is just a strong and immediate impulse that can't be denied, and I go with it.

And while I agree, there are plenty of starving children everywhere who could use real donations, he was a CNET editor who operated two retail stores so that his wife could write a book, I don't think he owned two major thriving businesses. plus with kids that young money dissapears I'm sure. I know if something happened to my husband right now I would have major financial issues.

So sad, his office was close to where I lived, I was so hoping they would find the entire family and they would be all right. If I was not a starving student I would bid!!

It is sad. But I think there's plenty of more deserving people out there that need your charity. James Kim did not leave behind a destitute family - they owned two business and a house in SF. Sorry, i'd rather donate my time and my money to charities that help people who really need the financial support.
