How the Causes Meghan Markle Supports Will Influence Her Charity Patronage as a Royal

Dec 30 2017 - 6:30am

Meghan Markle's life is about to change drastically when she ties the knot [1] with Prince Harry in May 2018 [2]. Not only is she saying goodbye to the United States and becoming a citizen of the United Kingdom [3], but she is also putting her acting career behind [4]. As she says goodbye to Hollywood [5] for good, she is taking on another exciting role: patron.

During her BBC interview with Harry [6] following their engagement announcement [7], Meghan added that she is very excited to "focus even more energy" on the causes that have been very important to her. As she preps for her life as a royal [8], we can't help but wonder which causes those will be. Kate Middleton herself is very active with organizations surrounding mental health awareness [9]. While it's unclear if Meghan will continue to be a patron of the following organizations once she gets married, the causes will most likely impact which charities she will support once she becomes an official royal.

One Young World

Meghan has been a counsellor for the non-profit organization's summit [11] on two occasions: in Dublin, Ireland, in 2014, and in Ottawa, Canada, in 2016. During the 2016 summit, she even spoke up about gender inequality as she called out the Suits creator for continuously writing scenes where her character was half-naked.

World Vision

Meghan is a global ambassador for the organization. In an article for Time, she detailed how her trip to Delhi and Mumbai opened her eyes to the stigma surrounding menstrual health [13]. In 2016, she also supported World Vision's Clean Water Campaign by traveling to Rwanda to visit with children.

UN Women

Meghan, a self-proclaimed feminist, is a big advocate for women's rights, as evidenced by her work with UN Women. During the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference of Women in Beijing, Meghan talked about how she "unknowingly" became a female advocate at the young age of 11 when she campaigned against a sexist dish-washing liquid commercial [14].
