When Politics is Worse Than Hollywood

I love almost everything about the fabulous city of San Francisco -- the beautiful architecture, amazing weather and most importantly the intelligent inspirational people I have met along the way. Unfortunately, that list does not include our mayor, Gavin Newsom. He has reached a new low. The celebrity mayor will be making a statement shortly regarding the scandalous affair revealed this morning. What's worse is that the affair was with Gavin's good friend and campaign manager's wife. Here's more:

Alex Tourk, who served as Newsom's deputy chief of staff before becoming his campaign manager in September, resigned yesterday afternoon after learning from his wife, Ruby Rippey-Tourk, herself a former Newsom staffer, that she and the Mayor had a short-lived affair about a year and a half ago. Rippey-Tourk told her husband about the affair as part of her rehabilitation program to overcome substance abuse. At the time of the affair, Newsom was in the process of divorcing his ex-wife, Fox News host Kimberly Guifoyle. After learning of the affair, Tourk confronted the mayor, expressed his feelings about the situation, and resigned. Newsom is expected to make a statement on the situation later this morning.

Let's just say we are not surprised. As one of my girlfriends said, we already have a mayor who spends more time doing his hair then we do, so you know there's a problem there. It would be great if he could concentrate on getting the homeless off the streets instead of bedding his good friend's wife.

Why did this woman feel the need to unburden herself, a year or so AFTER the affair ended? It was over. Just because she feels guilty as sh*t is no reason to confess to it. Now her husband feels horrible. Cheating on your spouse is wrong, but just because you feel guilty, don't compound the offense by burdening them with the fact you cheated. If the affair's over, bury it and take to the grave. Now her husband left his job, lost a friend an will probably divorce her chubby, cheating ass. ~~ "A rumor without a leg to stand on will get around some other way." ~~

I live in SF, right across the street from Golden Gate Park and I can tell you that in addition to being a total scumbag in his personal life, whatever Newsom is "doing" to "help" the homeless problem is not working. Just the other night a homeless man peed in my doorway and I cannot walk to the store around the corner without being asked by three or four bums for money. I love many things about this city - the food, the weather, the landscape, the shopping - but now that I have a child (7 month old daughter, way cuter than any celebrity baby), I am anxious to leave. It seems like the politicians are all in office because of their wealth and personal connections and no one is truly serving the best interest of the people. I don't feel safe or represented here any more, which is really sad because SF is (used to be) a wonderful city. It is such a fallacy to think that one's personal life does not impact public behavior. I don't trust someone who cannot make good, moral and wise decisions (like not dicking around with a friend's wife) for himself personally to make good and moral decision for an entire city.

Oh he is so sleazy. I did a service project in San Francisco. I worked at a summer camp and we had a youth showcase in city hall. He came for 5 minutes to sit with the kids on the floor...just for a photo opportunity and then left. Ross Mirkarimi on the other hand is so nice. Yes, it was a photo shoot for him but he stayed the whole time and even ate the gross food the kids made. He kind of reminds me of Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I m from new orleans so i really shouldnt be commenting about horrible politicians.

she WAS married, it was his FRIEND, and they are both "intelligent", educated, at least people. this is hideous and for those who don't care about their "personal lives" remember that these politicians are elected and run because they WANT to be in the public eye....they know what's expected and at stake for them. clinton did the same thing and theyre BOTH just disgusting and morally repugnant :( its an embarrassment to the bay area all around!

And seriously, you've got a short memory if you've forgotten former mayor Willie Brown's asian minx secretary that he hooked up with a fat six digit salary, all on the city dime.

Actually, he's done a helluva lot more to get the homeless out of SF by trying to cut their city-funded monthly checks. He was the one with the "care not cash" program that was largely defeated due to our idiotic Board of Supes.

If we got rid of every politician whose had an affair there wouldn't be many left... But I do think the affair was a tasteless choice on both their parts.

Gavin Newsom is an awesome mayor. He's dedicated, sincere, and genuinely cares about San Francisco denizens. This "affair" has absolutely no bearing on his credentials as a politician and is completely between him and the Tourk's. I have to wonder what motive Mrs. Tourk has to make this anyone's business but her own.

Sorry, but it always comes down to same old tired cliche . . . "power corrupts" (in one way or another) . . . yawn. And then, eventually, there is the media reality check. Wonder if Gavin will be checking into rehab, too-- like all the other skanks.

Pop, what is happening to our mayor, I thought he was GAY. What a damn shame, all that other good work for nothing huh? I remember two years ago being in NY when the governor of Jersey stepped down due to his affair with his male employee. The best part was watching the press conference, he announced that he was gay while his wife stood next to him smiling for the camera's, yes smiling. People are confused and greedy, arn't they worried about catching something????

Did this affair affect the way he ran his office? Was he a good politician otherwise? I'm genuinely curious. I still don't know how I feel about politicians and their personal lives. Many great leaders have had messy personal lives, you know?

i just listened to his press conference where he said "everything you have heard is true". hard to believe that no one on his staff knew about this. it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Let's add some context.... At the time, Gavin was in the middle of a divorce and his wife (spelled Guilfoyle btw) was living on the East Coast with a guy she has since married and had a child with. He has often been refered to as one of the most eligible bachelors around since he announced his divorce two years ago. Ruby Rippey-Tourk on the other hand, was still married and living with her husband at the time. So sure it was bad judgement to have a fling with a staffer, but he wasn't cheating on his spouse, she was.

I don't get it, how does this make him a bad mayor? I don't care what people do in their personal lives as long as they do their job.
