Zac Efron Interview With The Hollywood Reporter | April 2014

Zac Efron Explains That Skid Row Fight

Zac Efron is finally opening up about his headline-making fight on Skid Row in LA back in March. The actor spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in a revealing new profile about the fateful incident, explaining that the situation was a lot more innocent than it sounded. "We were having trouble finding somewhere — a lot of places were closed — and the car ran out of gas off the 110 freeway," Zac explained about why he was in the infamous LA neighborhood. "It was ridiculous. We had to pull over, and I called Uber. A homeless guy, or vagrant, tapped on the driver's-side window. Before I knew it, he [the friend] was out of the car, and they started fighting. I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of a knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him. At some point, he dropped the knife, and I got hit pretty hard in the face — and almost instantly the police were there to break up the fight."

At the time, many people worried that Zac, who has admitted to seeking help for addiction problems in the past, was involved in the fight for some unsavory reason. However, Zac went on to say that his recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous has become an important part of his life: "I just started going [to meetings]. And I think it's changed my life. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now." He added that his addiction is still a "never-ending struggle." Zac also touched on why so many former child stars tend to have issues, saying, "When you have success young and you accept the good things, you have to accept all of it. You have to accept the moments of glory but also a great responsibility. And that responsibility, to some degree, involves being a role model. At the same time, I'm a human being, and I've made a lot of mistakes. I've learned from each one."
