Dude... the disney stars are ripe to be made fun of. Even if they play their own instruments and whatever, they just seem so manufactured, and that's so boring. A little controversy would do them good... their music is bland as bran flakes. Russell Brand was funny, I just don't think he was right for the MTV audience. And the performances were kind of dull. VMAs just aren't unpredictable and fun anymore.

Mykie - I do think a lot of people use purity rings as a publicity stunt, or to fulfill the Disney image. I'm inclined to believe the Jonas Brothers right now...innocent until proven guilty. Joe is dating a "good girl" (Taylor Swift) and Nick is dating another purity-ring-holder (Selena Gomez), so maybe they are trying to keep it intact by dating other people who believe in the same things they do. As for Kevin, well...he's just not that attractive. Poor guy. However, there are some other Disney stars who can see not holding up to their promise. And I stopped believing that Britney was a virgin when she did her third album and the song "I'm a Slave 4 u" came out. I have to say, though, I believed her at first, but I think she was just being idealistic and she eventually gave in to Justin.

This is really late, but... lickety split - "the purity rings are a joke. i'm staying "pure" see my ring  the jonas brothers are either unicks or liars. and the girls; either false advertisers or liars." I don't know if you are talking about celebrities wearing purity rings being a "joke," or if you are making a general statement. Either way, it's not a joke and I think it's something to be commended if they want to stay pure. Maybe you don't want to live your life that way, and that's fine too, but you do not need to make fun of people who do choose to stay virgins until marriage. It's a difficult thing to do that, especially in the spotlight. btw its eunuchs, not unicks. ;) P.S. I didn't even find Russell's comments to be that offensive (about the purity rings), but he did harp on about it for too long.

I was thinking about Russell Brand's comments about the Jobro's last night and I came to a conclusion. the Jobro's are the ones that put it out there about their "purity" rings. If they'd just done it and not said anything and THEN RB joked about it, then I think we'd have room to be upset. As it is, because they put it out there, it becomes fodder for everyone. Think about every star/starlet that has tried to proclaim "I will stay a virgin until marriage". Most notably, Britney. Yeah, cuz that worked SO well. I don't buy that the 3 of them are virgins. I think they are using it the same way that Britney did, and frankly, as much as I dislike Russell Brand, good for him for calling them on it. Jordin Sparks, well, what can I say. I don't think the ring is the reason she's still a virgin.

I like some of the performances, but overall...I was a bit disappointed. Russell Brand was way over the line with some of the comments he made, and he just was not funny. When they showed the audience "laughing" it was fake & insincere. As for him making fun of the Jonas Brothers, it was uncalled for. There are funnier things he could've talked about, he didn't have to make the entire night about it. One of the reasons I like the Jonas Brothers is they are genuinely good kids. For those who call them liars, how do you know?? Is it so hard to believe that in this day & age teens are actually willing to not have sex?? They didn't really put out there that they wear purity rings, and actually won't talk about it in interviews any longer. But whatever. I like them. Although I like the song they performed, I don't think it'll be a good single...and I think they performed well. And, although it was obvious that it was set up for Britney to win those awards, I was glad she did win. I just don't think they had to make her win all of them. We would've gotten the point with one. BTW - she looked fabulous!! Christina Aguilera - a blonde Elvira, anyone?? ugh. I hated her look, and I usually think she can do no wrong.

For the bits I watched, Russell Brand seemed lackluster. What's up with his fashion and hair... is he auditioning for an 80s glam rock revival band? I don't get the Jonas Bros, because they can't seem to sing well and aren't very accomplished musicians. I don't care what hype they are selling about their personal life, but it's tacky for a host to pick on it. Britney looked healthier, albeit wearing dresses that looked like something senior citizens wear to the fancy dinner on their cruise ship. But gosh her teeth are white! They might glow in the dark. That weave looked a mess and she just doesn't look entirely present, mentally. Who actually votes on the winners? Perez Hilton said he's on some board that votes, so that probably explains the curious winners list.

It's true that mental illness should be recognized. But what the heck does it have to do with awards for music video? Should the Grammys and Oscardsa now have to hand awards for personal history instead of their craft now? I don't think so. But it's just MTV so we souldn't take it seriously.

The whole thing seemed staged to me, no way Britney rightfully won those awards and Tokio Hotel was a shot in the dark. I think the MTV execs picked the put they could make the most money off of. Also I like the host! Its been rumored on the internet for quite some time that not all of the Jonas Brother's are virgins, the whole "I'm a virgin" claim by stars is a plead for attention and ratings.

Actually, after reading more of these comments, many of you need to relax. Russel is from England, where they're not as uptight as some of us are over here in the U.S. When he said the word "retarded" for example, obviously he didn't mean to slam people with mental retardation and you know that. These days our society wants to start erasing words from our language and that is a very slippery slope. How about we just all RELAX.

Who is "we", briggs313? Speak for yourself, please. Russel is freakin' HILARIOUS. Comics are not always nice - that's the funny party. Relax.

I didn't watch this but going on all the reports, I love Brand even more than I did before. The LA Times said, 'The 2008 VMAs were poised to mark the return of Britney Spears. Instead, they will go down in history as the night when that English guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall almost made the Jonas Brothers cry.' HA HA HA!

"I think it's clear that Britney's record company (or someone) paid MTV for some publicity 'cause there's no way that video won that many awards. That's a joke. While I agree Brit looked better, she still has the vacant staring into space thing going on. I'm not sure she's ever going to be 'normal' again." YES, I was thinking the same. closed book.

I changed the channel as soon as Russell Brand used the word "retarded" as a slur. Vulgar and crude is one thing; patently offensive is another. I have a high tolerance and am often even amused by vulgar and crude comedy but using that word is way over the line.

I had such high hopes for Russell, but it was so annoying that he made fun of the Jonas brothers ALL NIGHT. EVERY TIME he opened his mouth, he threw them in there..I'd have found it funny and okay if it were only mentioned twice, not every 5 seconds. And I don't think Jordin Sparks was calling any sexually active person a slut, bc after that Russell was like, 'I've already been called a slut' and Perez Hilton said during the post show that Russell is known for being basically a sex addict. But overall, I do think Russell is funny and I like his Bush/Obama comments! And cherry chapstick on his dick haha. Anyway, the show was boring though. I think the best performace was TI and Rihanna, though Pink's was kinda cool too. I love Britney, but I don't think she should have won ALL THREE awards. Oh well.

Brit's intro was so overrated and poor thing was so nervous you would think she had never done this before.

I liked Russell as the host. He was funny. He made a hysterical comment about Thanking God amidst all the superficial bling. It was totally right on point. I liked Christina Aguilera performance it was fun. I loved loved the remix of Genie in a bottle. I only watched it for 30 minutes. I could not take it. The producers most think our youth has a serious case of ADD. Britney Spears winning awards about her downward spiral is an irony.

Wow so that's what MTV had to do to convince Britney to attend the awards, hand her a couple of Moonmen?? Lame. Whatever, we're not talking about a Grammy here anyway.

Pathetic that Spears got a standing ovation just for being able to walk across the stage without falling over. That's embarrassing. No one wants praise that isn't earned.
