As We Wait For Archies's Christening, Let's Look Back at Past Royal Baby Baptisms to Tide Us Over

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle introduced the world to their first-born son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, at a photocall at Windsor Castle, we've been waiting anxiously for his next big royal event: his christening.

According to People, Archie's christening could take place as soon as July or August. Although, there's a chance it could happen even earlier, ahead of the Queen's Summer trip to to Balmoral, which usually lasts from July to October. She will likely have to return to London during the Summer anyways to meet the new prime minister.

Being christened is a long-held practice in the royal family, as baptism is a sacrament in the Church of England, of which the monarch — currently Queen Elizabeth II — is supreme governor. But it's not just the ceremony that's centuries old. Many of the elements that are part of the royal family's christenings have been around for hundreds of years. Take the royal christening robe, for instance. The same christening robe was worn by every single royal baby since Queen Victoria's time, which made it a little under 200 years old. In 2004, however, a replica had to made once the original was deemed too fragile to be worn. (This replica will be what Archie will be baptized in.) Then there's the silver baptismal font, named the Lily Font, Queen Victoria commissioned in 1840 for the christening of her first child, Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa. Blessed with water from the River Jordan, it has been used to baptize every royal baby since 1841, including Prince William and Kate Middleton's three children George, Charlotte, and Louis.

So as we wait with baited breath for Archie's christening to happen, let's take this opportunity to look back at the many princes and princesses of the British royal family who have marked this unique milestone.

Queen Elizabeth, 1926

The future Queen Elizabeth, born on April 21, 1926, was christened on May 29 of that year in the private chapel at London's Buckingham Palace. The queen's mother, also named Elizabeth (front row, center), and father (back row, second from right) were at that time known as Bertie and Elizabeth, the Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke of York would become King George VI in 1936 after his brother King Edward VIII's abdication.

Prince Charles was born on Nov. 14, 1948, and at just 1 month old, was christened on Dec. 15 at Buckingham Palace. At that time, his mother was still Princess Elizabeth; she wouldn't ascend to the throne until February 1952.

Four generations of royals were present for Charles's christening: Prince Charles himself, his parents, Elizabeth and Philip, grandparents Queen Elizabeth and King George VI, and great-grandmother Queen Mary. Charles slept through the whole event.

Born on Aug. 15, 1950, Princess Anne, Elizabeth's second child, was baptized on Oct. 21 at Buckingham Palace. Again, generations of royals gathered for the special occasion. However, 2-year-old Prince Charles nearly stole the show when he entered the room and tried to get their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, to play with him.

Queen Elizabeth doted on her first grandchild, Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips, at his christening on Dec. 22, 1977, held at the royal estate Balmoral in Scotland.

Peter, born on Nov. 15, is not a prince, as Anne decided on forgoing royal titles for him and her daughter, Zara, who was born in 1981.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles held their son Prince William at his Aug. 4, 1982, christening in Buckingham Palace's Music Room. William had been born earlier that year on June 21.

William made quite a bit of noise during the photo session but was quieted when Diana put a pinkie in his mouth.

Prince William took center stage at the Dec. 21, 1984, christening of his younger brother, Prince Harry, who was born on Sept. 15 of that year.

The ceremony, held at Windsor Castle, brought many royal relatives together, including Charles's grandmother, the Queen Mother (seated, second from left) and Diana's grandmother, Ruth Fermoy (seated, first on left). Diana's divorced parents, father Johnnie Spencer (third from the right, standing) and mother Frances Shand-Kydd (seated, first on right), also attended.

The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, and his wife, the Duchess of York, the former Sarah Ferguson, held Princess Beatrice as they spoke with the Archbishop of York outside the Chapel Royal at London's St. James's Palace on Dec. 20, 1988. Prince Charles is in conversation behind the trio. Beatrice was born earlier that year on Aug. 8.

The guest list was small — only 22 people were invited — for Prince George's intimate christening, which took place inside the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace in London and was overseen by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Guests included the queen, Kate and William's parents and siblings, as well as all seven (yes, you read that correctly, seven) godparents, a list that included William's cousin Zara Tindall; Julia Samuel, one of Princess Diana's close friends; and a collection of childhood and college friends of William and Kate.

George was baptized wearing a replica of the royal christening robe, which, until 2004, was used to baptize every single royal baby since Queen Victoria's time. A replica was made a few years ago as the original robe had begun to deteriorate.

Kate Middleton posed with her parents, siblings, and in-laws for an official photo following Princess Charlotte's picture-perfect christening on July 5, 2015.

The christening took place at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on Queen Elizabeth II's Sandringham Estate, where the late Princess Diana was baptized, and although it was Charlotte's special day, Prince George also had plenty of cute moments throughout the day.

The christening of the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took place at the Chapel Royal in the grounds of St. James's Palace, the same place his older brother Prince George was christened in 2013.

At the ceremony, Louis Arthur Charles was baptized into the Church of England, by The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, who had just recently presided over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding.
