jmnast - WHERE DO YOU THINK DARFUR REGION IS??? SOUTHWESTERN REGION OF SUDAN!!! in addition to supplying oil money and weapons to sudan, china has vigorously defended the country against any international criticism over darfur.

Does Darfur have oil? Oh wait, isn't it Sudan that has the oil? Well, then I think the U.S. will stay out of it. Pretty sad.

Good on you DivaBunny, I think a lot of people simply don't see the connection between what's going on in Darfur and how it's affects Western politics. I think it's very important for the conncetion between the two to be made so that westerners, who have the resources and the power, understand the importance of using that power to stop genocide. I'm interested in how economic aid works to stop that.

"why should we care so much about darfur?" genocide! they are killing the men in these villages in front of their children and wives. and thats IF these paid killers dont kill the children and women. those that have been able to flee are all in refugee camps dying of starvation and dehydration. and if these horrible celebs like bono and geldof werent talking abt the situation in darfur it wouldnt even be in our nightly news. as far as how this affects our lives... its called oil! the chinese gov't has invested multi billions of dollars into africa for their oil and the us is being completely shut out as far as who is going to get this oil and who is getting the construction contracts, etc.... seeing that oil is the reason we have been at war for the last 6+ years, i would say that politically and economically anything having to do with oil is pretty major. when you boil it down, thats why people in darfur are being murdered.

I don't think that it's not en vogue to discuss the issues in the US, but let's get real. In this country we have mechanism set in place to help the poor, but it's the populace who votes that mechanism down anytime they get the chance. If people in the US want to eradicate poverty stateside then they should make sure the vote in those who support doing so, but time and time and again it's voted down. We as a country have to be committed to ourselves because we have the mechanisms and resources to solve such problems in our own country. Darfur is another story. I'm conflicted because I think the issue needs more than aid. For one, celebs need to connect the dots. Why is it so important for Americans and others to be concerned about Darfur, aside from the good feeling one would get from doin so? How does it affect our lives economically, politically as wella s morally. Too, why is financial aid the most important and effective solution, and is it, or are there other things we could be doing to solve the issue, if so what are they?

i'm shocked at the members who have made comments about having "darfur fatigue." wow! thats pretty harsh. you may be "sick of hearing about it", but if it werent for these people being the "squeaky wheel" no one would feel fatigue on this issue. most americans would never have even heard of darfur. there is alot of good being done over there. you have to start somewhere. i really feel that your attitude is dangerous. the holocaust didnt occur because people hated jews. it happend because of apathy. people either didnt know it was going on or they did and just didnt care. even if thats the way you feel... maybe you should keep it to yourself?

Hmm...looks like a nice event, but where is the money going to. I keep hearing about charities and seeing all these celebs dress up and down for Darfur, but I have yet to see any change for the actual citizens of the area...I'm just saying!!!

Ben Affleck doesn't have a gambling problem. As a matter of fact Ben was ranked after winning the California State Commerce Poker Tournament a few years back (before he married). Ben probably has won more money than he has lost over the years. Ben had a problem with Alcohol. His father is an Alcoholic. Many children of Alcoholics go through rehab to make sure they can control their use of Alcohol. Alcoholism is hereditary, so it was a good move on Ben's part. Ben seems to be in a good place in his life. Matt and Ben both look happy. Looking forward too both of their movies.

I understand that it can tire someone out to hear about it so often. But I also understand why people feel the need to do more than just sit on their hands. They might not be making massive differences, but it is better than doing nothing.

Who is the kid in the wheelchair that Ben is talking to? Is he the same one who has been friends with Ben and Ben spoke at his high school graduation? Whoever he is, it looks like Ben is the only one who has any time for him. I know Matt is the big thing right now, but it wasn't always that way.At one point, Matt didn't work for about three years. But I think Ben is a totally good guy, and five years from now, things are going to be different for him.

Jill I didn't say people should ignore it nor did i say anything about the actors, I merely said I am suffering from darfur fatigue, just like people got tired of the never ending famine in Ethiopia, when was the last time you heard about it. We've been hashing and rehashing Darfur, people have been lobbying for over 5 years, the world's leaders attentions have been turned there and nothing has really changed. What I'm trying to say and plaease don't get it twisted is that Darfur is going to be another statistic for Africa, another country/region gone wrong. It's going to be another Rwanda where people apologise for not taking action even though they knew what was happening, another uganda, and another sierra leone, another congo , another liberia. The knowledge is there, condoleeza Rice was accusing other governments of failing Darfur so people can't not know about it about what is going on in Darfur, but like someone said before me, there is nothing of value of value in Africa, only Africans. Why can't the world do what it did in Kosovo, in Bosnia etc?
