5 Awkward VMAs Run-Ins We Would Have Loved to See — and 1 We Actually Did

When you're a celebrity, there's no telling when and where you might run into an ex. From award shows to premieres to nights out on the town, you're pretty much guaranteed to be in the same room with somebody you dated, and this year's MTV VMAs were no exception. Former couples like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber and Amber Rose and Kanye West managed to avoid potentially awkward run-ins during the event — and we're just so thankful that there wasn't an incident between Blac Chyna, her ex Tyga, and his new flame, Kylie Jenner. Keep reading to see five encounters we would have paid to see in person (and the one that we got for free!), and check out all the stars who partied hard after the VMAs.

The couple dated from 2008 to 2010, but things got dicey earlier this year when a feud broke out between the former flames. After Amber Rose and Khloé Kardashian traded harsh words on Twitter, Kanye West stepped in and slammed Amber during an interview, saying, "It's hard for a woman to want to be with someone that [was] with Amber Rose," adding, "I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim [Kardashian]."

Amber hit back after the rapper's comments, first calling him out before tweeting, "I'll leave that up to the Kartrashians to humiliate u when they're done with u." She later sat down with ET and opened up about being "slut-shamed" by Khloé and Kanye, saying, "We were happy when we were together and all of a sudden I'm being slut-shamed because we aren't together anymore and it's not fair."

That feud that Amber Rose and Khloé Kardashian got into in February all started because of Amber's comments regarding Tyga (her BFF Blac Chyna's ex and the father of their son) dating the then-underage Kylie Jenner. Blac, Tyga, and Kylie have all traded barbs via social media since then, but luckily there was no sign of drama IRL.

Selena Gomez hit the red carpet (and later the stage) with her brood of famous girlfriends as one of the stars of Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" video at the VMAs, while Justin Bieber posed for photos solo and performed his new song, "What Do You Mean?" His set was met with a standing ovation, and the reaction must have overwhelmed the singer, as he began to cry while catching his breath. Sources report that Selena and her squad left the arena before his performance started.

Justin and Selena dated on and off (and on and off) from 2010 to 2014. Selena was linked to DJ Zedd earlier this year but seems single at the moment; Justin is rumored to be dating a new young star almost every week, so it was probably in Selena's best interest to steer clear.

Rita Ora and A$AP Rocky were rumored to have had a secret fling while he was still dating model Chanel Iman. The rapper wrote a scathing diss about the British singer in his song "Better Things" and alluded to a rift in an interview, explaining, "I got into a lot of trouble over her at times when I didn't need to. She caused a lot of grief," and adding, "I wasn't supposed to be doing things with her, I got in trouble. Put it like that."

After the song's release (and a bit of backlash about the lyrics), Rocky admitted that the verse was "tasteless, but I've got to stand by it, because I did it. I said it." Needless to say, these two did not cross paths at the VMAs.

Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas dated back in 2006 when they were still Disney Channel kids. Ahead of the VMAs, Nick told Billboard that he was looking forward to seeing Miley host the show, saying, "Expect the unexpected, if that's the way to put it."

They didn't meet up at all during the event, though — maybe it's because of that one time Nick played "F*ck, Marry, Kill" during an interview and picked Miley as "kill."

During that game of "F*ck, Marry, Kill" that Nick Jonas played in an interview, he chose Selena Gomez to "marry" over his close pal Demi Lovato and his other ex Miley Cyrus. He and Selena met up at a VMAs afterparty that night and were spotted having an intense conversation while Nick's older brother Joe DJed.

Selena and Nick dated from 2008 (after he split from Miley) to 2010, and both of them are reportedly single right now. Could there be a reunion in the stars for them? We'll just have to wait and see.
