All the Events From Season 3 of 13 Reasons Why in Chronological Order
If you're still a little confused about the order of events in season three of 13 Reasons Why, don't worry — you definitely aren't the only one. After all, eight months passed between the end of season two and the present events of season three, and with these teens, you better believe that a lot of sh*t went down during that time. When we open on senior year, Alex and Jessica are broken up, Bryce and Chloe are at new schools, Zach is on crutches, and there's a mysterious new girl who seems to know everything about everybody. Um, what? If you're hoping to refresh your memory on what exactly happened between the Spring Fling and homecoming before season four premieres on June 5, here's a handy guide for all of the major events leading up to season three's conclusion.
The Truth About the Spring Fling Attempted Shooting Is Covered Up
At the end of season two, we last see Tyler as he is driven away by Tony, and in the season three premiere, we learn what exactly went down the aftermath of the Spring Fling. After driving off in Tyler's car right past the cops, Clay meets up with Tony and Tyler, and all three guys head back to Tyler's house to spend the night so Clay and Tony can keep an eye on him.
Clay, Justin, and Alex then work together to create a schedule that allows Tyler to be under constant surveillance. The crew decides to cover up the whole attempted shooting by telling the police it was all a misunderstanding, and even Zach, who had called the cops in the first place, reluctantly goes along with the plan.
Ani Arrives at Liberty High School
New girl Ani starts at Liberty High School just days after the attempting shooting, and Clay is recruited by Courtney to give Ani a tour. He admits that things have been weird at the school lately, and Ani manages to gain his confidence, as well as that of Justin and Jessica. With Ani's support, Jessica even runs for student body president for the following school year and wins.
Chloe Gets an Abortion and Breaks Up With Bryce
Chloe confides in Zach (with whom she's become close after Bryce transfers schools) that's she pregnant and the baby is Bryce's. Zach helps Chloe handle the process of getting an abortion both emotionally and financially, and in the aftermath, she decides to break up with Bryce, keeping the abortion a secret.
Later on, Ani (who lives in the Walker's guesthouse because her mother works there as a nurse for Bryce's grandfather) walks in on Bryce crying. He explains that his girlfriend has just broken up with him, and Ani comforts him, suggesting that a friendship is soon to develop.
Bryce and Alex Strike Up a Strange Friendship Over the Summer
Hurting because Jessica once again broke up with him for Justin, Alex starts hitting up Bryce for steroids in an attempt to feel more masculine, and the two guys become friends. After being coerced by Bryce to participate in a number of questionable activities — such as using cocaine, visiting a sex worker, and destroying a stranger's home — Alex ends the friendship with Bryce, but he isn't ready to kick his new steroid habit.
Monty Hooks Up With Winston
At a party over the Summer, Monty kisses a guy named Winston at a Hillcrest party. When Winston tries to take their relationship public by asking Monty on a date, Monty beats him up in a panic. Bryce helps out Monty by getting someone to take the SATs for Winston as a bribe so that Winston is certain to keep his hookup with Monty secret.
Clay Threatens Bryce
When Clay goes to the Walker home to ask Ani to the homecoming dance, he sees Bryce, who tells him that Ani isn't the kind of girl she appears to be, and in his rage, Clay foolishly threatens to kill him. At the homecoming game, Clay sees Bryce kiss Ani, and as a result, Clay sends a number of menacing texts to Bryce. When Clay confronts Ani about the kiss, she lies and says that Bryce misread her intentions.
Bryce Asks Jessica to Meet Him by the Pier After the Game
After Tony makes Bryce listen to Hannah's tapes and understand the full extent of the pain he's caused, Bryce intends on apologizing to Jess. He creates his own confession tape and texts Jess to ask her to meet him down by the pier after the game is over.
Bryce Attacks Zach
Before the homecoming game, Chloe tells Bryce that she was pregnant, but she got an abortion and Zach had been there to support her. Bryce gets revenge on Zach by attacking him during the homecoming game brawl, blowing out Zach's knee and effectively ending his football career.
Later that night, after visiting the hospital, Zach goes down to the pier where Bryce is supposed to meet Jess. He attacks Bryce in return, smashing his knees and throwing his phone in the water. He leaves Bryce badly hurt but still alive.
Alex and Jess Meet Bryce at the Pier
After calling Justin several times and not getting an answer, Jess calls Alex, and he accompanies her to the pier where she is supposed to meet Bryce. There they find Bryce badly beaten by Zach. Bryce gives Jess the tape he made with his confession, as well as an apology for everything he did. Though Jess wants to leave after receiving the tape, Alex attempts to help Bryce up, which only angers Bryce. Alex pushes him into the water, where he drowns, and Jess tells Alex that they have to stay apart to make sure they never get caught.
Bryce Is Reported Missing and Then Later Dead
It becomes known soon after homecoming that Bryce hasn't been seen by anybody since that night. A few days later, his body is found in the water by the pier. While Clay appears to be the main suspect due to the threatening texts he'd sent just before Bryce's disappearance, other suspects include Mrs. Baker (who was recently back in Crestmont to close her old house), Bryce's parents (who realize that Bryce knows about his father's love child), Justin (who loves Jess and resents Bryce for raping her), Monty (who was just threatened by Bryce to leave Tyler alone), Tyler (who has access to firearms), and of course Alex and Jess, who are the real culprits.
Monty Is Sent to Jail
During the joint Liberty-Hillcrest assembly following homecoming, Jessica invites all sexual assault survivors to stand up and make themselves heard, and Tyler gains the confidence (and an ally, thanks to Charlie) to go to the police station and officially file a report about what Monty did to him. Monty is arrested and imprisoned, where he is later mysteriously killed.
Ani Gives Her Testimony
Though Clay is arrested during the Liberty-Hillcrest assembly, Ani clears his name when she talks to Deputy Standall, to whom she's been narrating her testimony during this whole season. Ani tells Deputy Standall that Clay had been driving around with her all night on the night of Bryce's death, giving him an alibi. She also tells Alex's dad that Monty may have been the one to kill Bryce, saying that Monty threatened Bryce the night of the game (though, in reality, Monty had been at the house of Winston, the guy Monty hooked up with over the Summer).
Though Deputy Standall feels pretty confident that his son is the guilty party, he still accepts Ani's testimony naming Monty. Later, when he tells Alex that Monty is being named as the killer, Alex's relieved reaction leaves no room for doubt. Standall burns Bryce's tape and the clothes Alex wore when he killed Bryce to make sure that all of the evidence is destroyed.
