Altered Carbon Season 2 May Be Coming, but It Would Look Different

The latest Netflix series to hit the streaming service is sci-fi thriller Altered Carbon, set 300 years in the future when an individual's consciousness is now downloadable (a "stack") that can be transferred to a new body (a "sleeve") if the previous body is "killed." Joel Kinnaman stars as a downloadable soldier finding himself in a new body who is charged with figuring out who killed wealthy Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy). We won't spoil how the season ends, just in case you haven't quite gotten through all 10 episodes yet, but we do have a few speculations about season two.

First off, nothing is official yet. As star Kinnaman told NME in a recent interview, "Netflix policy . . . is they never discuss a second season until they have released the first one."

However, an eagle-eyed writer at Spoiler TV spotted back in December 2017 that Netflix has apparently taken a few preliminary steps that may indicate a quick renewal after season one's release.

According to Production Weekly, a site that tracks the production schedules of hundreds of movies and TV shows, Netflix has started ordering scripts and booking studio space for a season two production start date of October 2018 in Vancouver. Now, this doesn't mean a renewal is set in stone. If Altered Carbon bombs in viewership, the company could simply let the series die.

But rumors are flying that this is one of Netflix's most expensive productions to date, so they obviously have a lot of faith in it. Barring some kind of total flop in the first few weeks the show is out, we would expect Netflix to renew Altered Carbon fairly quickly.

But if a season two is in the cards, don't expect the cast to necessarily look the same as in season one. Kinnaman told NME that he doesn't know if he would be involved in a second season.

"I think there's a big chance that Kovacs would be resleeved if there was a second season," said the actor.
