American Idol Season 10 Changes Include Reducing Top 24 to 12, Music Videos, and Decade Theme Weeks

American Idol Shakes It Up For 10th Season: 3 New Changes

When American Idol returns for its 10th season in January, there will be other big changes besides the brand-new judging panel. Producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed three new changes to the show's format. Check them out below.

  • Fewer will make it to the top: Instead of a top 24, the show will start with a top 12. "I didn't think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there," Lythgoe mentioned. This is similar to Lythgoe's change to the most recent season of So You Think You Can Dance, which cut down its finalists from 20 to 10.
  • Music videos: The contestants will have to make the best music video and also learn to work with a band and back-up dancers.
  • New theme weeks: Instead of having theme weeks devoted to a certain artist or genre, the theme will be decades. In addition, Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, will be an in-house mentor.

What do you think of these new developments? Do you think they're enough to get people back into the show after last season's low ratings and the loss of Simon Cowell?

I haven't watched American Idol since season 4 when Carrie won because 4 seasons of the same thing was getting dull, so I think it's definitely time for some changes. Hopefully this will be one of the last seasons though.
