Anne Hathaway to Play Judy Garland on Stage and Screen in Adaptations of Get Happy

Anne Hathaway to Play Judy Garland on Stage and Screen

Anne Hathaway will soon be doing double duty as Judy Garland: She's been cast for both a theater and film adaptation of a book about the troubled star's life.

The roles are based on the biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, which comes from the same writer who wrote the Truman Capote biography that was adapted into the 2005 Oscar-nominated film. The Garland book was originally published in 2001, and the Weinstein Company recently picked up the rights to it for both stage and screen.

Harvey Weinstein said Hathaway "will be a true class act in this challenging role." We know from this year's Oscars that Hathaway can sing — and from Rachel Getting Married that she isn't afraid to play the dark sides of addiction, which Garland struggled with throughout her life. Can you see Hathaway in this role?

Anne will be OK but I was thinking of Hillary Swank as ideal for playing Judy. She looks just like her and has that same girl next door tomboy quality.

Wow... the amount of people just blindly going along with the very mediocre Hagaway playing one of the greatest entertainers of all time is... shocking to say the least. She is average at best (horrible and tries too hard at worst), she's too skinny and tall, she has too many ugly large facial features whereas Judy's were naturally pretty and small, and hello! SHE CANNOT SING LIKE JUDY! She can hardly 'sing' period, let alone as perfectly as the Little Girl with the Big Voice! I am not pleased with this hideously overrated, trashy attention whore playing Judy at all. Man, first it was Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, then this, now they're casting Amy "Psychotic China Doll" Adams as Janis Joplin! What on EARTH is wrong with people?! They're just randomly casting popular stars! They don't have the looks and talent it takes at all. It's horrible and ruins these stars' memory.

It's a great casting idea, I'm excited, but I don't know that the vocals will truly be that stellar. Sure she has a great broadway voice but will she be able to age with the character and show off the grit and artistic beauty of Garland's older voice? Unlikely. I'm so going to be first in line if this film keeps up the buzz, or I'll wait till DVD if it turns out to be lackluster. However, vocally, online one young diva could handle this performance==Aguilera!

nooooo! Tammy Blanchard was so so so so good as judy! and i really hope anne doesnt do her own singing, i mean sure she can sing, but there is NOOOOO WAY she can sing like judy! i love judy, but a really good movie was already done about her life, why is there a hollywood obsession with bio pics? no creativity??

Oh good, because I like my Anne Hathaway with a little more meat on her bones! She can gain a little weight to look the part more, and they can always downplay height on screen. I think this is fabulous casting.

as much as i don't really like her anymore- i think that this is something that she's going to do well. she really can sing which was a shocker and we know that she's good at playing a distressed person. we'll just have to see what happens i suppose

Sorano, I agree that she has to gain some weight...but I think she's great, I'm biased though because I love her!

I'm not sure how I feel about her. Never have been.

I might be the only one, but I'm iffy on this. Anne's too tall and too thin to play Judy. I actually loved Tammy Blanchard who played Judy in "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows" a couple of years ago. Guess the studio just wanted a recognizable face with Anne then...
