What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

The Avengers

For the first time, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) come together when Thor's madman brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) threatens to bring wide destruction to Earth. You don't need to be a comic book fan to enjoy Joss Whedon's adaptation, which is packed with action and humor. The DVD comes with director's commentary and an "Assembling the Ultimate Team" featurette.

More than just comic book fans agree that Joss Whedon's epic superhero movie is a big success, as it earned rave critical reviews in addition to being the year's top earner at the box office. The DVD comes with director's commentary and an "Assembling the Ultimate Team" featurette.

Damsels in Distress

Greta Gerwig leads the cast in this enjoyable comedy from director Whit Stillman. Violet (Gerwig) and her two friends have a habit of helping — or at least trying to help — lost souls on their college campus. When they come across Lily (Analeigh Tipton), they feel compelled to take her under their protective wing. Extras include commentary with Stillman and cast, outtakes, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette and an interview with Stillman and the main cast.

One more new release when you read more.

The Tall Man

Jessica Biel stars in this forgettable boogeyman tale that takes place in a small town where the children are disappearing one by one. Julia (Biel) doesn't believe stories of "The Tall Man" until her own son vanishes in the middle of the night. Instead of dwelling in her grief, she channels it into action and sets out to solve the mystery. The DVD extras include a featurette on visual concepts, deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer.
